Do you know a girl who consistently under-achieves? Who is anxious? Does this girl's teachers tell her that she could and should do better. if she would just try? Maybe this girl has Attention Deficit Disorder. The negative symptoms of ADD often look a lot different when you compare girls and boys.

What can you share about girls with ADD?

Please read the related link at the end of this article about girls with self-harming behaviors.

Connie - I was very interested in your latest article on girls with ADD. You've got me wondering about one of my twins especially.

There were a few red flags for me reading your article. I commented and LIKED your article on FB. My girls have had big changes since moving from CA to NY - a total cultural difference for them both. However, my youngest twin over the last 2 (maybe 3 years) went from being a neat freak and getting mad at everyone because the room was a mess - to not caring about what it looks like now.

Unlike her 3 minute old big sister (lol) she isn't as astute, meaning she has to think about answers to simple questions, misplaces things, is disorganized, very emotional when I get on her case about something. Her sister attacks her with long nails on her arms (the music teacher noticed that) and we had talks.

They just graduated to middle school, but my girl in question had to go to summer school (again) but pulled it off to graduate.

Your article got me thinking. Thanks for that! I always thought maybe she had some form of autism...now I'm not sure.. And this year they will be in separate classes (a first since they were 6 - they are 11 and a half now.)

If you think that there is a problem, trust your instincts. Have your daughter evaluated by a mental health professional who knows what ADD and autism looks like in girls. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I've known multiple kids who had a diagnosis for both.

The research on girls with ADD and their self-harming behaviors worried me a lot. I haven't seen any follow-up research, have you?
