I recently brought a candidate in for a second round of interviews. The first interview they came in professionally dressed. We gave them 24 hours advanced notice of the second interview. The second interview they came dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. What happened? They were so confident they had the job, at that point, they didn't think appearance was important.

Appearance is always important whether it is the first or the fifth.

My co-workers and I were recently discussing this topic where younger workers are concerned. At out workplace, we've seen so many questionable clothing choices lately. It seems that many younger applicant are not aware of the importance of dressing according to the office culture for the interview. Cleavage, snakebite piercings, visible tattoos, and ankle bracelets are just a few of those we discussed. It would help job seekers a great deal if they were to research their potential employers before the interview.

I agree younger job seekers sometimes veer more toward a business, "very" casual. I love the high schools that have business courses and teach the younger generation about professionalism.

I'm wondering if we, the older generation, need to perhaps change our vision of the interview apparel...now that's a scary thought isn't it. We were talking about this at work the other day.

In fairness, however, I've seen a LOT of the older generation recently showing up in jeans, dirty shirts, sneakers...LOL...
I keep thinking they should really know better!

I think it depends on what type of company you are applying to. If you overdress or underdress, yes it will affect you in a negative way. I tell job applicants to study the company dress code before their interviews. This way you fit into the culture and can concentrate on getting hired and your future employer can see that you took the time to research their company. A win win situation!

Good point, I would say if the information isn't available to go with over rather than under.

My last two employers did not put dress code information on their website. If a candidate can find it, however, great!

Be your self, if you passed the first interview you have a big chance to passed another interview. Tell or show to the interviewer the truth and nothing but the truth about your self. Before I hired with my company Seo experts ask me "tell me about your self", they want to know what are my strength and my weakness.
