Hi Peter,

I like lighter red wines like Chianti and my new favorite, an Argentine Malbec. Can you tell me what Shiraz is like? I don't mind trying something new and that is a wine I always wondered about. These days I stay away from the heavier wines like Cabernet and Merlot.

Thanks!

I think if you like Malbec you'll enjoy Shiraz.

Try a glass in a restaurant or bar. Only way to find out smile

Great idea, Peter, thank you. Not every restaurant with a wine list offers it, but I will start looking, not that I go out all that much. And I bet like any type of wine out there, there are great ones and not so great ones. From what I have read Shiraz wine can run the gamut from light to full bodied. If there is a region you particularly like for Shiraz, let me know. I will let you know when I finally try one!

The region that made Shiraz its own is Australia...

But its ancestral home is France's Rhone Valley, and a bottle of Cotes du Rhone will be a blend based on that grape variety*.

Cotes du Rhone (CdR) is always a reliable choice on a restaurant wine list and CdR wines will be lighter and less alcoholic than Australian Shiraz.

*In France Shiraz is known as Syrah.

Thanks for the additional information, Peter. The next time I go out to purchase wine I will look out for Cotes du Rhone. If it is reasonable I may just get brave and buy a bottle! And yes, I do know about the name Syrah. I will keep you posted.
