Moons of Venus and Mercury? An unknown planet nearer the Sun than Mercury? Astronomers can misinterpret what they see, too. Happily, other observers, better instruments and new theoretical understandings can put it right. Here are some phantom objects that many astronomers once thought existed.

Phantom Planets and Moons

You can see the illustrations Father Hell made of his experiments with a telescope. He found that sometimes there was a double reflection which made it look as though Venus had a small companion.

And you can find out more about Father Hell - Astronomer.

Urbain Le Verrier was mistaken about a planet closer to the Sun than Mercury, even though it was a reasonable hypothesis. He died convinced that he had discovered two planets. Although that was wrong, his work did lead to the discovery of the planet Neptune. He has been described - supposedly by Francois Arago - as "the man who discovered a planet with the point of his pen." Le Verrier is buried in Montparnasse Cemetary in Paris.

Here's the picture that NASA put up for an April Fool claiming the discovery of a moon of Mercury. The date should have been a giveaway: March 31, 2012. A second hint for astronomy buffs: the enlargement of the supposed moon was immediately recognizable as the asteroid Ida. It was visited by the spacecraft Galileo in 1993, and was the first asteroid known to have a little moon.
