Losing a job after fifty is tough. Baby boomers who are losing jobs after age 50 face unique challenges. They are more likely to encounter significant financial losses with less opportunity to recover. Older workers are more at-risk for layoffs than younger workers. Finding a new job is significantly more difficult for those over fifty.

Great article!

At a time when people are retiring later and later, it's becoming increasingly difficult for the more mature worker to find jobs.

I know a few people that didn't take their careers and/or jobs seriously when they were younger, job-hopped all over the place until their late 40's, early 50's and now can't get a job.

Some employers do hire mature workers because they like the "experience", but there are fewer and fewer of those employers.

Some older workers are able to retire from their long-term jobs and start new ones. I've seen several state employees who are able to receive retirement and take on new jobs. Even if they are paid less in the new job, having a retirement check coming in as well is helpful to them. Of course, in some cases, retirement programs limit the amount of money you can earn while also receiving retirement payments, so it's important to check one's retirement plan policies before taking on additional employment.
