Hiya all,

Well we have a thread for Garden themed Poetry, so I thought we could also have one for quotes with a gardening or plant or flower etc. theme. There are so many many many out there so I hope you will join in and add your favourites or just those that catch your eye as you read along.

Here is my first suggestion:

"By plucking her petals, you do not gather the beauty of the flower."

Rabindranath Tagore, philosopher, Nobel laureate (1861-1941)

There is something to think about I guess ... what would your comments be? Or perhaps you would prefer to add a different quotation? Please do.

Cheers now

Hello Everyone,

"As a gardener we have to trust the land knowing that all seeds of love and understanding, seeds of enlightenment and happiness, are already there."

~ From 'Cultivating the Mind of Love.' Thich Nhat Hanh

Have a great gardening day, cheers

Hello everybody,

Here is some excellent advice that has certainly stood the test of time!

"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106BC - 43 BC)

Cheers now, am off to improve both!

Hi there,

I found this one and liked it so ... made me think of Scrooge.

"Saepe creat molles aspera spina rosas."
Often the prickly thorn produces tender roses.

Hello Everyone,

Here is a quote that can be stretched out of its allusion to writing (though that stands for for BellaOnline too) and into the realms of gardening. Do you agree?

"The pages are still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamouring to become visible."

-Vladimir Nabokov, novelist (1899-1977)

It's as if, as with any change of season anywhere in the world, you may be thinking about what to do with some of your empty pots and containers and spaces ... that miraculous feeling of the flowers being there, planted and clamouring to become visible.

What a really nice thought for both a writer and a gardener!

Cheers now,

Hello one and all,

Phew! I haven't visited this post for a long time, what a pity. Still, here is a quote I came across some time ago but I cannot say where it comes from or who penned it.

"They come and vegetate -- early-goers and scandent socialites -- loitering about and small-talking on the pavement; gradually they edge indoors to the crawl of ivy and creeping plants, spreading like gossip through rooms and around corners."

If you recognise it and can tell, please do so and in the meantime, I hope you like it,

Cheers now

Lestie, I happened on this quote this morning and thought of you.

Hey Mona,

What a nice quote as you say ... and that you thought of me when you read it makes it even more special! Thank you, and thank you too for the fascinating articles you post - a lot goes over my head as I haven't quite yet got the measure of the overwhelming beauty of the skies, but I read on anyway.

I hope 2015 offers up all you seek,

Cheers

Hello there,

Here is a nice one to contemplate ...

I've just seen this. It has to be added to your garden quotes. It was the last tweet from Leonard Nimoy before he died.

A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP

Hello Mona,

For some reason your quote is not showing in the forum (or maybe I can't access it?) Anyway, thanks for posting it and thereby letting me know that Leonard Nimoy had passed away.

Your quote that you added:

Life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had but not preserved, except in memory.

To this I smile and remember so fondly those original Star Trek days where it was fashionable in our group to give the Vulcan salute as if you were greeting in peace and logic and then saying "Live long and Prosper."

Amazing the impact that such a character will always have on us ... ah, here is to the memories of those 'perfect moments.' Thank you Spock.

Cheers

Hello All,

Here are two for today ...

Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help.
Gardening is an instrument of grace.

May Sarton (1912-1995) American poet, novelist, and memorist

and

The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied.
They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.

Vita Sackville-West, 1892 - 1962

Cheers - do you have a garden quote to add?

Hey there gardeners ...

"You can tell what kind of gardener you are by your tools -
... trowel and trug mean you're a primrose and sweet pea sort;
... wheelbarrow and seed dibber mean you're a potato and marrow person;
... concrete mixer and socket-set mean what you most like to grow in your garden is a fourth-hand Ford Sierra."
from Guy Browning 'Never Hit a Jellyfish with a Spade'

Hello Greenfingers!

Here are three quotes that each made me smile - I hope you like them as much.

Gardening is not like reading a book, one cannot skip the bad parts.

Either you think gardening is good for the body and soul or you're wrong.

"People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us."~ Iris Murdoch

I don't have references for the first two - sorry.

Cheers

Don't you just love being with your plants?

Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas.-
Elizabeth Murray

This is more a gardening metaphor than a gardening quote, but it doesn't need much time on the Internet to see how appropriate it is.

Common sense is a flower that doesn't grow in everyone's garden.

Hey Mona, loved your comment!

Here's one to smile at I think ...

'Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration.'
Lou Erickson, critic and poet

The lesson I have thoroughly learnt, and wish to pass on to others, is to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives.
