It is never selfish to take care of yourself first. Working out is taking care of ourselves. We do this to prevent disease, to be strong, to reduce stress, and live on in dynamic ways.

Fitness goals are not selfish but empowering. Disregard what others may tell you, you are taking care of yourself. The better you are for yourself, the better you are for others.
