Sir Alec Guinness was born one hundred years ago, on 2 April 1914 in London. He died on 5 August 2000, leaving a legacy of wonderful performances on stage and screen.

One of best actors ever! His George Smiley in the TV adaptation of John Le Carre was brilliantly nuanced. But I loved the way he did so many different roles so well. Of all the great Ealing comedies, Kind Hearts and Coronets is my favorite, a real treat with Guinness playing all the D'Ascoynes. So funny.

Oh you are so right to mention George Smiley Mona - the acting turned out to be just the way I had imagined Smiley when I read the books. For me though, Le Carre's writing is so rich that unless a person had read the book, the TV programme would not have made much sense.

I saw it with a friend who was thoroughly confused. Of course I was no good in trying to fill in the background bits and just gave up by telling him to go and read, read and read.
