Flowers from the florist are popular for Mother's Day. But for really stellar mothers, here is a cosmic floral tribute with links to some dazzling astronomical images.

Mother's Day - an Astronomy Bouquet

I was moved to write this article last year because it was the first Mother's Day without my own stellar mother. I still miss her. It's dedicated to her memory and to other people who have suffered this loss.

I've added the images that are linked in this article to my Pinterest board "Astronomy Bouquets".

This was such a wonderful idea Mona. My mother and I used to look at the stars, she was fascinated by them and always used to have plants with a scent which came out at night, so she could sit in her gardens and enjoy both the heavens and the perfume.

Have looked at your 'Bouquets' so often, it is amazing just how colorful the night time skies really are, one just doesn't realize it from down here.

And your Pinterest boards are just fascinating. Wow it must have taken ages but you have put some great work in there, lucky for us. cool

I've added to the Pinterest board a picture of a spiral galaxy dotted with pink (emission) and blue (reflection) nebulae, making it look like a garden with scattered blossoms: Spiral Galaxy NGC 2403

How about a kilometer-wide moonflower?

Moonflower or crater?

Super Mona, love the Cosmic Rosebud, that is beautiful, and somehow the Floral Aurora Corona looks like an Iris to me, they are just coming into bloom around here and are such a lovely mixture of blues and green. The "Moonflower" is gorgeous hard to believe it is 'a hole in the ground' basically.

Thanks Mona, great choices.

Mothering Sunday was traditionally celebrated in Britain on the fourth Sunday in Lent. Apparently it referred at one time to worshipping at the mother church. So servants might get a day off to attend with their families, if they lived in another town. But although the date remains, the celebration has pretty well come into line with the USA's Mother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to mums in the United Kingdom! For some out-of-this-world flowers, have a look at my pinboard Astronomy Bouquets.

A new cosmic flower for an astronomy bouquet.

Click to see the Ring Nebula in Lyra to see a planetary nebula that looks rather like this white camellia blossom.

Here is a space sunflower that may exist one day. It's part of a proposal for a space telescope to image extrasolar planets. The "sunflower" would actually be a starshade so that the star's light could be blocked while imaging the planets.
