Have you ever been baffled by your own behavior? Have you ever wondered, "Why am I like this?" Here is my suggestion for finding the answer.

Thank you for a great article! I've spent a lot of time in reflection and it has helped me better understand myself and why I had issues. I made major progress once I began to recognize my patterns and see how they developed--yes, just as you said in your article--during childhood.
As children, we are so easily imprinted upon by our life experiences. Now as an adult, I feel greatly empowered by my ability to reason things out and choose how I want to process what happens (even what has happened) in my life. I finally get that I am in charge of my inner world and have the power not to allow the outside world to intrude upon my happiness.
It's still a daily struggle and I must be vigilant because I can react from past pain and the other injured spots in my psyche. But I do my best to reclaim my power that I use to transform the past pain into a stronger, wiser, more joyful me today.

Lori, thank you for sharing your own experience with us. I think we could all live a more content life if we deal with our past. It sounds like you are a good example of how to do it.

I have often wondered why I feel so different from most other people. For one thing, I seem to feel "more" than most, not less. When I was growing up my parents were distracted. My father was paranoid schizophrenic, and verbally and physically abused my mother. My mother was just trying to survive. There were countless times I had to deal with my own emotions of fear and stress on my own.
I am one of those people who is not comfortable with large crowds, especially social events where you are expected to mingle. I prefer small, intimate gatherings.
With time I get to know myself better, but I still feel a little different than most.

Hi Debbie, I can see from your description of your childhood why you might feel "different." I assure you it is a common feeling for children who grow up feeling so alone. You are not actually different, it's just a feeling.
