Hi all,

This Saturday is Tibetan Losar, or New Year. I have already written a bit about this at the time of Chinese New Year, since many Buddhist countries celebrated at that time, but this year the Tibetan New Year differs by one lunar month. Here's the info on the year of the horse if you missed it:

Year of the Horse

I also wanted to let you know that Lama Tsultrim Allione is hosting a free open webcast on Losar, talking about the 6 bardos as 6 opportunities for liberation. Here is more info, this is truly a wonderful teaching, offered in great generosity as an open webcast in this manner:

6 Bardos as 6 Opportunities for Liberation

The Dalai Lama is traveling in the U.S. right now, so I am not sure whether he is giving a public Losar address this weekend or not, his schedule does have him at a Losar event in Minneapolis, but it doesn't say whether his comments will be recorded and posted.

As I mentioned (and as you've probably seen on the news!) the Dalai Lama is touring the U.S. right now, and will be in Minneapolis for Losar, Tibetan New Year, this Saturday. He is speaking a lot on civic responsibility right now, and action in the world as a product of compassion. This has special significance taking place right around the Tibetan New Year. Here's some excerpts from a speech he gave in Los Angeles:

“Once we understand that like us other human beings want to live a happy life, and that our own future depends on others like them it will be easier to develop compassion. This is a question of survival...And in order to protect our sense of compassion, we need tolerance and forgiveness. These are the kind of qualities that are important in a healthy society, that are the basis of a happier more harmonious community. To achieve this in reality, we have been working on a curriculum to introduce secular ethics into our education system from kindergarten all the way up to university.”
...
“In America, this hub of innovation, we must apply innovation to our system of education. Those of you who belong to the 21st century, the future is in your hands. The past is gone, remaining only as a source of experience we can learn from, but the future is open; you can reshape it. Those of you who are young today can change the world. What you need is vision and determination.”

I just completed Lama Tsultrim's teaching (link above) and it was wonderful - the recording will be placed at the same link to watch any time later this week.

Also, the Dalai Lama will be doing his annual Losar address tomorrow, and it will be livecast, here is the link to that:

Happy Losar everyone!
