I got an e-mail from a reader yesterday. I love hearing from readers, and Susie sent such great compliments for the Campari tomatoes. She was beyond pleased about them. Here's what she said:

I just ate my first Sunset Campari tomato and I'm in HEAVEN!!! Haven't had the taste of a REAL tomato since I moved to Florida from Michigan 25 years ago!!! I'm so thrilled my husband purchased them by accident! I can't wait to have some with cottage cheese!

They need to advertise a lot more. I had NO idea that they were out there! I'd given up on tomatoes for good. They taste like NOTHING but these little beauties are a gift from God!

Here's a link to the review. Thanks for writing Susie!

Hi Connie and all,

I stand to be corrected but I read somewhere that there are some 10 000 varieties of tomato plants! With that much choice, you can guess that you had better know what you want to do with your tomato as maybe this will help you choose.

Anyway, Campari tomatoes apparently gained popularity in the growing stakes when it was mentioned in the TV programme The Sopranos. Badda Bing! I don't remember this but who really cares as long as they are around, the tomatoes I mean!

Like other cherry style tomatoes, they grow around 4 to 6 feet high, need a cage or staking, need moderate watering and moist good loamy soil and hot sunshine. They can be grown from seed as well as plantlets and hail from Mexico. So there.

I am going to see if I can find any seedlings here in S A as I haven't grown this one before. From your description of the taste and look Connie it sounds fantastical - so I shall seek it out right now. Tasteless cold room nuked irradiated and long life vegetables make it onto our tables regularly; I think we have to fight back for ourselves and grow our own.

Cheers and I will let you know if I am successful,

I have had these tomatoes and they can be very good. They are a bit pricey though, and sometimes are not as sweet as other times.

I buy mine at Costco. They are still pricey, but not horribly so.
