Hello there,

Debbie, you say in your fine article

"On Valentine’s Day let’s express our love and appreciation for our sweethearts, family, and friends, and with every passing day let that affection shine through to deepen our bonds with the ones we love. The spirit of love lives on well beyond one special day."

You are so right!

Commerce has its place with anything, at any time and for any occasion - and when you come to think of it, nobody is twisting anybody's arm ... money spent is spent of one's own accord.

I think it is silly to blame the shops. They are there to offer a service or a product. Take it or leave it - but please don't blame the retailer for your lack of action, guilt, cynicism or overspending.

Got to come back to the spirit of it all and make that work for you. And when it does, well then there will be good things and satisfaction.

Phew! I sound a bit preachy and I really don't want to be; it just fusses me to hear a constant complaint that events and so on have been too commercialised.

But I say again - it's up to us. Any celebration is ours to make of it what we will.

Happy Valentines day to us all.

Cheers now

Lestie.....at least in the U.S. there is a push to buy, buy, buy as advertised on t.v., radio, and printed media. I think some may feel pressured to have to buy something unaffordable in order to express their true feelings to a loved one. Of course it is up to the buyer what they spend, but I personally know people who sometimes feel pressured by what they think is "expected" in this day and age when celebrating a holiday.

I hope my article expresses the importance of focusing on the spirit of love, affection, and quality time spent with one another, as opposed to feeling obligated to make purchases that are just material things.

Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. Have a great day!

I will start....

For Valentine's Day not too long ago my boyfriend bought me a heart shaped ruby pendant. The solid red of it was a symbol of love and closeness. It meant the world to me then, and it does even more so now. He has since passed on to the spirit realm, but I cherish that necklace and think of him whenever I wear it.

My husband doesn't like the commercialism of Valentine's Day. However, he does little acts of kindness every day. I am a blessed woman.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier, Debbie. As for a memorable Valentine's Day...I remember when my kids were little, I taped up dozens of paper heart cut-outs with flaps. I wrote down what I loved about them in each one and they (and my hubby) were so happy to hunt around the house to read them all.

Then, they sat down to a heart-shaped meal. Everything was heart-shaped!

I love to make them happy!

And, I'm with you, Connie. My hubby shows and tells me he loves me every single day, and I am a blessed woman.

Connie......that is great. You are indeed one lucky woman to have such a sweet husband. Those little things every day mean so much.

Lori.....thank you for the great story. It reminds me of one similar....

When I was a kid my sister, brother, and I would do nice things for my mother on holidays like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. I remember for at least one Valentine's Day we had all made cards for Mom, and I made garlands of small hearts on string, hearts cut out of pink and red construction paper. The hearts were taped to the string and the string taped at one end to the ceiling over the kitchen table. So strings of pink and red hearts came straight down from the ceiling towards the table. I must have taped at least six or eight strings of hearts over the table.

On the table were our handmade greeting cards, more pink and red heart cutouts, candy, treats, and whatever else we had made or purchased for Mom. She was a single parent trying her best to keep us all going and we enjoyed doing this nice thing for her during the night when she was sleeping. She had a nice surprise in the morning!
