Join in people - thanks to LanceB we can start and see how far we get with our verse game for garden produce.

Ogden Nash (his family gave their name to Nashville) was born on my birthday lucky man - or was it that I was born on his? Anyway he was born 19 August 1902 and died May 1971. He wote many books of poetry and is well known for his brief nonsensical and easy rhyming poetry as well as other writing.

Remember in another post I mentioned his 'parsely is gharsley' well, that was a typical Ogden Nash and here is another to do with food that he wrote ...

Celery

Celery, raw
Develops the jaw,
But celery, stewed,
Is more quietly chewed.

Now on another post LanceB came up with one about mint so let's see what you can write. Try to emulate Ogden in any way you can, but use a subject that pertains to container gardening and off you go!

Here is my first effort -

Strawberries

Strawberries and cream
Make tennis a dream.
But hitting the net
means a cup you'll not get!

Cheers now

Be careful what you wish for, Zesty Lestie.

Snailing in Idaho

There once was a green-thumbed lad from Idaho.
Wow could he make things grow!
You'd think he would relish the state of the potato,
Or even a cherry of a tomato.
Rather, he'd prefer to slowly eschew on an escargot.- Ogden Shulman

"Please Sir, can I have some more?" MORE? MORE? You want some more? Yes pleez.

Roses.

If there was one bloom
to choose for one groom
then I would say rosies
are a must for the posies.

Cheers now

A Menagerie of Roses

A kindly gentleman caller was he,
As he would nurturingly say to she,
To me, your name is lovely Blue Roses,
For in my eyes,as all should see, you have outgrown the pleurosis.- Ogden Tennessee Shulman

Bird 'n Bees

Birds and bees
and a breeze in the trees
Makes a fine summer day...
So why don't I play?

Courtship requires at least some effort

The indolent swain
eyed Jane in vain.
No rhymes, no ring,
no chocolates to bring –
not even a flower chain.
For he was too lazy
to pick a daisy.

Love it Mona - thanks so much for playing too... okay

Pots and Pots and Pots

And now dear Madam do you realise just wot
it is that you can put in a pot?
Well in your pots of all different sizes
Go Plants and Flowers and Foods of all guises.

Chard

I wish I could wax poetic about chard
As it verdantly grows in a container in our yard
But alas I am no bard
As rhyming is so hard
However, I can say that consuming much will retard
My becoming a tub of lard

Chard Two

Chard is good. Chard's a should.
Chard on my plate if only I would
With Chard on the menu, now hear here and see
I'll do what I must to grow hellth-ee!

Thanks for playing, I am certainly smiling...

Lovely Tiny Red Chili

Lovely tiny red chili,
How you mature so seductively.
Although you add spiciness to every dish,
I have just one wish.
As you are removed from the pot,
Ay caramba, must you be so damned hot!

Sluggish?

A garden slug is a real pest,
Slime-ly gnawing away at a plant's very best.
Now lurkers you need not be a slug,
Verse-ly you can join in and be quite a witty bug.

Hi Les and all,

Let's hope that the lurkers will join in and not be sluggish...

Arty-Archibald

A is for Artichoke, so easy to grow
Tastes just great for those in the know
The leaves are medicinal, the flowers pink and pretty
Harvest the fruit - you've none? More's the pity.

I have been having fun writing lots of these so hope to post them regularly - please join in if you haven't already.

Wonder what Ogden Nash would say about our take on his verse ...
worse? curse? terse?

Smile now!

He Said, She Said

“You're gardening for hours.
And what good are flowers?
When they blow in the breeze,
they make me sneeze.
A poppy is sloppy,
a lily is silly
and daffodils don't pay the bills.”

“Yes, I hear.
Right, of course my dear.
But have a tot of hemlock tea,
That'll cure your allergy.”

Tit for Tat she did

Parley is gharsely said Ogden in verse
but Hemlock, like parsley's much worse;
So here sweet dearest is your tot of tea
What? You can't breathe? Oh no - let me see!

Poor Socrates!

Cheers now

Adverse- Maybe?
Converse- Maybe?
Perverse- Maybe?
Herbiverse- Definitely!
Carniverse- Definitely Not!

Hey there and thanks for this Les - hugs accepted with pleasure anytime!

So should we carry on? I think so. Just because - and so here are two for Monday...join in people, thanks.

Argument about Lemons

A lemon tree is always free
To scent up my garden for me
Sour and tart by way of fruit
Is that nice? I say it's moot.

And

Flower Fever

A Dahlia won't fail'ya ... a Glad'll make you smile
And Daffodils will grab your heart for a while
But my favourite favourite certainly pulls rank
What's yours? Ag, just fill in the blank!

Good week to you all! Cheers

Lestie, before your computer goes kaput,
Here's one more Ogdenian input.

The Fragrance of Guavas
Some say guava,
Others claim guayaba, kuawa, or even guyava.
Delicious they certainly are,
Either fresh or from a jar.
Yet, whether fleshy white or pink,
Overripe, they really stink!

Bouquet of hugs

Ahhh, the blossoms in the bower,
so beautiful each flower
and deliciously scented.
But will the slithery slugs
and bothersome bugs
perhaps make me demented?
Ha! No! Braveheart shrugs.
And says thanks, kind sir, for the bouquet of hugs.

For a companion plant of note
Go for Marigold she wrote
Scented orange and lemon drops
Have Pyrethrum, so the bugging stops!

Hello there,

I was/am busy writing an article for later on patios so I stopped for this bit of fun...need to pronounce patio as payshio. Ta.

Horatio's Patio

There was a young gardener Horatio
Who spent lots of time on his patio
He’d weed and potter and plant and flower
And smiling with wine, he’d get happier by the hour.

Now our green Horatio was certainly no slouch
Even tho’on his patio he had a large couch
See he‘d work hard all day in a Company so fine
And come home to slouch-couch with a glass of white wine.

But the reason he loved most as it gave so much pleasure
Were the pot plants and creepers and veges of treasure
Oh! The scents and the colours and the thrill of it all
For Horatio it meant that his friends then might call.

Go well in your garden today...

Hated or Loved Cilantro
Cilantro
You can grow and grow.
Why many people hate you so,
I will never know!
Perhaps if you were disguised as coriander,
People would view you fond-iander.
Or seen as a Chinese Parsley sprout,
At least they wouldn't spit you out.

Sweet Sweet Basil
Fragile sweet basil must never be abused.
So care for it tenderly, as it shouldn't be bruised.
Gastronomically create pesto-ed, salad-ed, sauced, pasta-d, souped or stewed.
Then it can be herbal-ly appreciated and, of course, chewed.
After all, it's only food!

Garlicked
Garlic is certainly a favorite,
In many ways I do so enjoy to savor it.
Gingered and stir-fried a la Asian,
I'd consume it on any occasion.
Olive-oiled, sauteed, and calamari-ed,
On it, I could feed and feed.
Foiled and roasted,
Cream-like, I'd eagerly spread it on bread.
Peeled and raw on a stick,
Un-a-peal-ing-ly, never would I'd venture to give it a lick.

Hello Everyone and Everybody and All,

I am back in the land of computers for the while so here we go with a bit of catch up and forum chat.

Oh Les - Ah Big Yaws? I loved the Boston Garden and had to read it several times - heaven knows what a Bostonian accent is like as far as I am concerned, but I had a lot of fun and smiles, thanks so much.

As for Garlic - she is one of my absolute favourites as well, what would we do without it in the kitchen or health stakes? I dunno.

Okay here is my Ogden offering for today, but also think we can put a spin on the 'game' if you wish.

How about the last person to write a 'pome' gets to nominate the subject of the next? Let's see what this does and what more we get? I hope for more verse anyway...

Chatterpots

I talk to my plants and in general they listen
And those that don't, well, they don't get my kissin'
Each works for its place in my garden so pretty
My latest? A container of grass for my kitty!

Next subject: Weather

Cheers now

I can always find something to grow in a pot
See the choice 'tween the soil or the sun or the shade
Grows me plenty of veggies I am able to trade!

I am having fun so I'll just carry on! Join in if you feel like it ... ta

Pie in the Sky?

Hello!

Well, I will get to organic mechanic sometime unless you want to? But in the meantime I came across this from Ginny on a gardening site Digger's Rest. I smiled broadly - oh so smart! Thanks Ginny - have you written any others?

Whether the weather be cold
Or whether the weather be hot
Whatever the weather
We'll weather the weather
Whether we like it or not!

Hey Guys,

Who says we always have to follow the rules. See this pome I got from Mr A Nonni-Mouse.

Tights as pants for garden fashion,
Unsightly, leaves nothing
to the imaginashion.
Now if your dress was
a summary of passions,
then why not cover your bits
with some pink carnashions!

Cheers now and go for the butterflies next time,

And here is one from somebody who is also a Miss A Nonni-Mouse. She is shy and wishes to remain mysterious as it is a VALENTINE'S VERSE.

Listen Pleeez

Roses are Red and
Violets are Blue
Unchain my heart or
Just say "I DO!"

I am sure Ogden would have liked that one.

Have you got a piece of Valentine-style verse to offer? Why not mix the two into one theme ... that of gardening and love? Works for me - thanks and cheers now,

Butterflies in the garden

She flutters by,
saying hi
to the zinnia.
But that's not her dinnia,
for she loves the nectar of phlox
in the window box.
Phlox rocks.

To get to the aster
her sister has-ter
fly past-er.

Their brother's not losin'
his chance, he comes cruisin'
seekin' a black-eyed Susan.

Oh, I adora
all the flora
and the butterflies
delight my eyes.

Thank you so much for this delight Mona, all colourful too just like a Flutterby. Well here is my magnum opus on snails - dropping back to one verse next time around.

A Snail's lot?

Oh slicky snail so slowly loitering
giving me an ugh! when I am watering
It's no good just picking you up or throwing you away,
Doggone it! You'll only come back another day.

That slimy sluggy trail you leave
Makes me for my lettuces grieve
I know you like them, but darn! So do I
So listen Mr Snail, you go now - bye bye.

Your mortal enemy is a Hadeda's cry
'cos he sees you easily with his eagle eye
He chomps through your shell for a stork's snacky bit
So leave my garden now - go, go, get on with it!

You don't speak English? What do you mean
Well then Mr Snail, do you speak Green?
If so then you'll know that a bucket of water with salt
Will certainly bring your garden journey to a halt.

I wonder often if there is a snail heaven
For if you don't leave now it's for there you'll be leavin'
Begone, slide away Begone, go on slither
And don't take my smile as a sort of come hither

Now my heart softens for my Aggies I know
Always give you a safe and comfy place to go
So leave the veggie patch alone, pray Snail
And please don't come back or you'll face my pail.

Cheers now,

Next up: Lemons

Oh Lestie I know this is not a verse...........because there is no way I can manage something the way you guys do..........but your missive on snails had me giggling away with 'ah ha' memories.

Now what I was taught by a German gardener was to put out shallow bowls of beer (well this is Germany we are talking about), then the snails drink the beer, become besoffen and can be captured in the morning and 'dealt with'. Well my idea of 'dealt with' was driving them miles away so they could sober up in one of the nature reserves.

However in France someone, not many kilometers from where I am sitting at the moment, adapted this idea, after I had told them over dinner, to allowing them to become 'drunk', for want of a better word, and then served up in garlic butter a couple of days later...............................

Problem solved in my friend's garden though, hedgehogs, encouraged by specially brought in German hedgehog food, have arrived en masse, and snails plus slugs have exited stage left.

Hey Francine, thank you for your comments - poetry suggestion is not required or set in stone. I am just having so much fun with this Ogden verse game so I carry on playing.

So here is one for you!

O Woe is Me.

Now Francine's snaily tale of woe
Started in her car with far to go
To find a place of safety, there the snails to sleep
off their adventures with beer, their lives to keep

But now Francine of her neighbours is not so sure
As with her story now their snails they do lure
with beer too, and then for a snaily first course
Serve them up for grub in a garlic sauce.

BUT a snail and his sluggy mates are not so *dof
See they now have German hedgehogs to see them off
Are they pleased? Who can tell as most slide and slime
Thwarting those critters ... and just in time!

* dof rhymes with off and is Afrikaans for dull-witted or stupid.

Smile now!

Cheers

And here is another VALENTINE'S VERSE...

Listen to the Whispers!

Chocolate is coming, I don't want to get fat
It's the white truffle stuff that knocks off my hat
And for you? Maybe the rich and dark 90% cocoa
Drives you nuts or makes you coca-loco!

Leave the chocolate behind please I'll spring for a rose
Any colour will do, as for me anything goes
As long as with it comes a bit of ... well you know
Those three little words plus, so just go with the flow

St Valentine now you'd better do your bit
As all of us, that's you and me, just get on with it
To celebrate a day on 14 Feb, a day of love
Sweet sentiments and goo I am certainly not above!

Now heed my words you silly man
Or you'd better make another plan
To stay over with a work-a-day mate
If nowt is done, then a sound round you'll rate!

Cheers now and smile see!

Lestie and Francine, thanks for your tales of snails. It was a good laugh. I have a friend who used beer traps, but I can't imagine her tenderly relocating the molluscs to a nature reserve. I don't know if she never thought of the butter and garlic, or whether our garden snails aren't the culinary variety.

Hello there to us all - FYI I took this straight from Esquire.com so please go there to read other interesting stuff ... but thought you may be interested.

.................................................................
"Is there a difference between regular snails and the snails eaten in France as escargot, or could I head out to the garden and toss the pesky critters into my frying pan?"

Feh! That said -- and far be it from Answer Fella to judge a fellow harshly simply for eating hermaphroditic, mucus-secreting vermin -- fire up your oven. The common garden snail found here in the U.S. -- Helix aspersa, the European brown snail -- is among those served in gay Paree, and also in the typical uppity-goy American joint.

Note well, however, that you can’t just snatch ‘em up and scarf ‘em down. Snail hunter and escargot chef Victor Yool says you must first “put them through at least a two-week purging cycle, because there’s no telling what they ate” -- insecticide, for example, or a plant like foxglove, which is toxic to human beings, though not to the French. Yool maintains his snails in a plastic bin, feeds them cornmeal and water, and waits for them to poop out whatever they’ve ingested prior to their capture.

When they’re good to go, Yool boils his snails for ten to fifteen minutes. “This forms an incredibly disgusting scum that you must keep cleaning off,” he says. “When the scum is gone, you know the snails are okay.” He then takes them from their shells; dices the meat finely; adds butter, olive oil, garlic, and parsley; restuffs the shells; and bakes “until they’re bubbling -- at most fifteen minutes. Or you can put them into puff pastry and avoid the shell altogether.”

Yool recommends serving them with a white wine or a mellow red, and, of course, a plain brown vomit bag."
.................................................................

Do I eat snails? No. I. Do. Not. Never.

Cheers now, back to the theme of Ogden poetry and lemons...

Hello there ...

Lovely Lemons

What would a pie be like without a topping of meringue
And without any lemon, well there'd just be no bang,
That spring zing of taste, a tad sour a tad tart
With multiple uses to warm anybody's heart!

Next: Add a verse to Lovely Lemons or go CONTAINERS

Cheers now

Well, well, how interesting. The care and feeding of snails. And then feeding off snails. Couldn't see myself going through all this preparation, but I did often eat them in France.

If the day is hot, put down your spade.
For the peace you've sought, sit in the shade.
Rest in your spot, let your weariness fade,
And from the lemons you've got, sip lemonade.

Hi Mona and thanks - we could write an Ode I guess, Lemons are just too marvellous for words. But then so is all gardening I say. Maybe I will carry on the lemon saga another time but for now here is

It's a Pot I've Got

Containers come in all shapes and sizes; plastic and ceramic too
Choose your pots carefully ask yourself, “what are they going to do?”
Then clean them, line them, saucer them or place them in the sun
And plant them up with flowers, veggies and herbs - enough for everyone!

So go for another verse for Containers or try TOPIARY

Cheers now

Oh dear I posted the same message twice - so in editing it I have moved on ... too quickly I fear but no harm really done!

Scissor-happy Blues

Oh Topiary Mopiary me
When I started out I thought I had a tree
But after cutting around I find
That maybe it’s just not kind

To trim a shrub, aye there’s the rub
And it’s enough to send me to the pub
To grieve the cuts and drown my sorrows
While I contemplate my container tomorrows

But a with a small smidgeon of thought
I find I can do what I ought
To save my changed herby bush,
The thing is to take my time, and not rush.

So if it is a lollipop, a round or a square
What’s more important is that I am there
To ensure a good shape and a neat one too
I think it looks great – don’t you?

As usual, add something to topiary or go for SOIL

Cheers for now,

Hi People, hope you are not all chocolated out! Anyway, I think we have to come up with other reasons to receive red roses and chocolates. What do you think?

In the meantime, here is a bit of 'verse' on soil.

Chocolate for Earthworms

Now when it comes to the importance of SOIL
The correct choice, the right one is worth all the toil
the boil, the bubble and the trouble! It’s all in the mix you see
The plants, any kind, settle down, grow, and show easily

That they really like the feel of the loose loam
And while their roots spread out in their new home
The leaves and flowers stretch up up and away
Ready to do their thing and produce for another day.

Now the addition of sand and compost and perlite
Sees top results which also just might
Harvest more and more as the plants share their bounty
With so much fruit or seeds or beauty, one loses county

Still the time and effort I spend in the garden gives such pleasure
That at the day’s end, with my feet on my table of leisure
I pick some fresh herbs for green tea ... Oh happy happy goil
As I smile and patiently wait for my kettle to boil!

Okay, next is something more tricky? Try some more on any subject that has been written about - either add on
OR write another OR try TRIFFIDS

Cheers now

Hi there ... speaking of earthworm chocolate I am reminded of this short bit of verse by Dorothy Parker that I thought I would remind you of again -

No Squirms Worms

“It costs me never to stab or squirm
To come by chance across a worm
Aha, my little dear, I say
Your clan will pay me back one day”

They sure do pay us back with the constant work they do for our soil. Thanks guys!

Hello there,

Well I think that Trifids is too difficult right now, so let's leave them alone for a bit until the imagination gets going into the realms of fantasy again.

So what about Ground Covers?

Lovers of these Covers...

Soft and green and fresh and kind,
spreadingly scented ground covers, you'll find
Are a pleasure to grow, by themselves or 'tween stones
A great place of rest for a gardener's weary bones!

There are all sorts and shapes and in fact so many
But my favourite has to be my dear creeping Jenny
But there's mint and grasses and pennywort too
that give up their spring and scent from under my shoe

Now why grow them I hear a somebody ask
For many reasons I answer, it's such a small task
To prepare a shady pot or a patch of tree ground
Such pleasure they offer is what I have found.

Next: Lillies - join in - it's fun!

Cheers now

Hi there,

Do you grow lillies? They are such easy contestants for your container garden. If you have the pots, three in a row would really look great!

...............................................................

Gilded Lillies?

Lillies, oh so many, are amazing and gracefully fine
It's difficult to choose which one for any garden of mine
Majestic, colourful and fragrant too
In pots they're beautiful! Please grow some - do.

Now which would you say was your all-time favourite?
Zantedeschia, those Arums, well they have to be a hit
But for me, if I truly really and must absolutely say
It has to be my Aggies, they're for me any day!

.................................................................

Add a verse to Lillies if you would like to or try MOSS next time.

Cheers now

Hello there and a good gardening weekend to all!

There will be an article on Moss coming up soonish,
but in the meantime here are a few lines! Join in if you will.

...............................................................

No Moss? Your Loss!

In the coolth of your garden, and mostly in the shade
You could grow some gentle 'creatures'... and all by Nature made
Dark green, cream green, emerald green, some blue
Slowly find a place in your heart - it's just what they do!

Slow growing, low maintenance and useful in many ways
Moss will make your Bonsais look fine for their displays
And when you need to sit, in serene silence, on your garden chair
See! the Moss Faerie might visit as you could be near her lair.

Now you may ask "Can I grow Moss in a pot?"
Well the short answer to that is a simple "Why not?"
Over flagstones and pavers and 'tween steps moss can wander
Shallow-rooted and easy, it'll make you pause to ponder

on how magical life is ... with a place for all;
The short, the long, the colourful and the tall
Use Sphagnum and Peat, a duo sure to please
In your containers to hang from the branches of trees.
...............................................................

Why not add a verse?

What's next? How about MY GARDEN HAT.

Cheers now

Hi Guys,

Well before we tackle the garden hat I found this original Ogden Nash ...

BUGS

Some insects feed on rosebuds,
And others feed on carrion.
Between them they devour the earth.
Bugs are totalitarian.

Hello one and all,

...............................................................
Ode to Milly

It's floppy, a tad torn, but she's my favourite garden hat,
I've had her for years ... now what do you think about that?
She really works hard, seen me thorough rain and through shine
She has grown with me for sure, that favoured hat of mine.

She cream coloured and blue-ribboned, and she's made of straw
Plants smile when they see her coming to of water give them more
In the kitchen she hangs near the back door on a hook
And right next door to her is my journal, my treasured book

Of garden notes and ideas, of things done wrong and done right
where they're put back of course when gardening turns to night
Do I wear her all the time when out and about I hear you ask?
Well of course, for as old as she is she's still up to the task.

Do you have a garden hat? does she have a name? I call mine Milly
What? you don't and you think that naming a hat is silly?
Well to that I'd say 'If garden hats could speak,
then all my black thumb secrets Milly might leak!'

But no, we talked of this you see, and Milly's promised to keep
her mouth shut when it comes to idle chat, there's not a peep
From her, even though when I go to the weekly garden club meet
she flops even floppier for she knows when she's beat

See Milly's not smart enough, and her place is taken by another
New, with a brimful of pretty flowers, it belonged to my mother
Now Pat as a hat is much smarter of course and worn when on show
When I go to the lessons and lectures by people in the know.

BUT Milly remains and will always be my favourite garden hat,
She knows this I know ... so what do you think about that?

...............................................................

Cheers now ... Next? How about ORCHIDS

Hello Everyone,

Gee how time has flown past, and the orchids have been waiting their turn for a treatment so patiently! Well here is a little poetry fertiliser for them, why not add your own verses, or change the subject if you want to.

...............................................................

Orchidelirium

They say an orchid is just like a spoilt girl,
Has strength, flexibility and will give it a whirl
A shower of sun in the steps of her blooms
A Phalaenopsis in white to brighten our rooms.

Oncidiums, Cymbidiums, Vandas and Dens - oh oh my
You just fall in love with them, who can say why,
There are thousands of hybrids, such beauty, such grace
There'll certainly be one to suit any place.

Pray tell what kind of orchid have you grown before?
Their mystery I think just makes you want more
of the epiphytic ease they have of growing just right,
these with air roots and misting and cool temps at night

Now we call Paphiopedilums and Cymbidiums terrestrial you see
They need some soil and rotting leaves and humus to be
in line for a buyer or a growers indoor outdoor choices
And as members of society are certainly Rolls Royces.

And a word not last, not least, about a girl wild at heart
The Southern African Disa most certainly plays her part
in capturing a orchid aficionado's focus and attention
For this lovely has lots to show that I can here mention

Orchids - do we all like them? You bet we should and we do
There's plenty of charm and love in them there for you too
So buy one, get one and learn about these fascinating plants
Because caring for them is mostly do's, and not many can'ts!

..............................................................

Okay so what is next? Your choice of course but if you are not sure what about SCARECROWS?

Cheers now

Hello one and all and to the crows that need to be scared away!

ScaREcrow

Oh don't be such as scarecrow my brother used to say
How do you hope to make friends if you chase them all away
I suppose I should have listened then; I should have smiled instead
But then I wasn't on guard you see, or protecting what I said

But they could not have known that then or indeed just how shy
A scarecrow is, for then they never asked or knew how or why
the job of a scarecrow is actually a lonely one
Hanging around all day under the long hot sun

I guess the saddest thing that a scarecrow has to bear
Is that more often than not nobody knows it's there
And as the corn grows and it's all for the birds
That fixed straw smile is really too sad for words!

...............................................................

Have a go, add another verse to ScaREcrow, or what about something on FLOWER NAMES FOR GIRLS?

Cheers now

Hello there,

I came across this original Ogden Nash on the Caterpillar and thought I would sneak it in before the Girl's names subject - enjoy!
...............................................................

The Caterpillar

The Caterpillar, as it's called,
Is often hairy, seldom bald;
It looks as if it never shaves;
When as it walks, it walks in waves;
And from the cradle to the chrysalis,
It's utterly speechless, songless, whistleless.
...............................................................

Cheers now - add your own verse to Caterpillar or go for flower names, join in!

Hello All,

Phew! There are so many names a person could use and so many pretty and strong and meaningful ones at that.

I am not sure that Ogden Nash would have approached this in quite the same way - but still, I had fun thinking about it.

Flower Names
...............................................................

Girls and flowers seem synonymous don’t you think?
I mean if you got any bloom then I can say in a blink
You’d put them in water, there to scent and enjoy
With good thoughts for he who gave them … clever boy!

So if a transient bowl of blooms give so much pleasure
Imagine if your name was a bloom, now there’s treasure
For there are flowers and plants and other things green
After which we are called … all fit for a queen.

There’s Daisy and Violet and Fern and Rose
I’d not mind being called any one of those
Or what about Lily or Saffron even Fleur might do
Or what about Angelica or Myrtle, they might suit you too

I knew a Blossom once – a unisex name I am told
A generic flower name perhaps, not like Marigold
Or Primrose or Rosemary, those other Rosy names we know
And there’s Rosalind or Rosemond, yet other ways to go

There could be Poppy, or Flora or Marguerite or Bryony
Acacia and Jasmine or Petal and Aster, even Zinnia or Ivy
Zahara has pizzazz, Leilani is gentle, Daffodil? I’m not so sure
Still, for silly names like Apricot or Apple it may be a cure

Do you know a Delphine, a Heather, an Iris or a Pansy?
Or maybe you’ve met a Camellia, a Peony or a Tansy?
What of ‘the lady of the house’ Hyacinth or Lanthe or Zinnia
Might you have a friend called Calla, or Ash or Petunia?

There are so many more names a person could choose
And named after flowers and trees and plants, who’d lose?
There are girls names and boys names and from many to pick
But really loving and living your name is the trick.
...............................................................

Add to Flower names, OR write your own verse OR why not try something on PERRENIALS

Cheers now

Hi there xmeecosmic and all,

Thanks for stopping by and adding your lines - pretty close to Ogden Nash for sure.

Second verse ... similar to the first!

For thosey who do opposey our rosey,
All blooms in my posey are mine by my chosey
So mosey on down to meet Lilly the Silly,
or Oopsie the Daisy for a bunch willy nillie.

There once was an ardent gardener named Lestie whose plantings were ultra zesty with many considering them the very besty. In fact, the only time Lestie was ever testy was when people did not give a fig for her fig as that she could never dig.

So then came along a journo who interviewed Zesty Lestie
He asked all sorts of serious questions, believe it! None were jesty
He spoke of pots and plants and blooms and things pesty
He asked for her potting and ground secrets ... and she said "Yesty."

Now how is it that you have such sweet pots sans the mess-ty
of re-potting, re-planting, re-using, come! come! be confesty,
To which she replied "Of course, why not? Be my guesty,"
"It's the interest I have in things green, read on ... it's my questy."

Alas too, he heard how she wished for the birds to be nesty
in her potted trees, but they listened not to her be-hesty
Most ignored her pleas 'cept one fat grey chap with a fine cresty
That visited for water, seeds and fruit - from the westy.

Journo asked for her favourites, but he got no answer from Lestie
"There are too many great plants - so there can be no contesty,
From plant type to colours to weather, for you, you'll know what's besty,
Just choose your own and you'll see ... the history will be the resty!"

Now when it comes to figgings and diggings and riggings and all
xmeecosmic is so right, it's the chatter and care in love with which we all fall!

O dear and thanks I am smiling smiling smiling! Cheers now ...

Tomatoes vrot
are certainly not
What I would want to eat!
So when it come to harvesting the reds,
I always find my fast feet.

*vrot in Afrikaans, 'v' pronounced as an 'f' means rotton etc.

Okay all, please join in again and thanks xmeecosmic.

Now when it comes to ethics
It's surely a case of pathetics
When it's all GMO
and we don't always know
and there's much that's not nice
and of life you can't take your sussed slice.

***************************************************************

P S

Day by day
this game I can play
poetering around;

So if you like to grow things green
and you can host earthworms unseen
There's fun in pottering to be found.

Cheers now!

Are you easily detached from the things you should do?
Like weeding or watering and tidying too?
Will you ever be able to pretty pots pitch woo?
Of course you will so move through your boo hoo!

Perennials coming up - cheers now

There once was a lass named Celeste-a gardener among the very best who preferred to be called Lestie living life with utmost zesty. She was so coy with every boy none of whom she would try to please, exasperatedly they called her Lestease.

Hi there everyone,

What flowers should you choose for your pots and containers and planters? Well, I always say that whatever you choose will be right for you, thank heavens for choice and difference.

...............................................................

Perfectly Perennial

Perennial is what perennial does
See those that I grew are still is and not was,
And they can last for longer that a year by far
Such prettiness in my pots, so much more that they are.

Now some annuals can be perennials too,
I guess it depends on the gardening you do,
But perennials aren't annuals, not really I say
Unless you're planting new things and they're in your way.

For an explosion of colour, texture, form and much fun
Self-seeding perennials just can't be beat for one
And for two, when frugal habits are needed just in
Perennials will serve you all agin and agin!

...............................................................

Cheers now - let's go for CREEPERS next time ... unless you want to add a verse to anything.

Hi there one and all,

Will do creepers soon but here is a sad one ... or maybe not?

When you are feeling down and your heart is sore,
Go to your garden - you'll need nothing more
The flowers ... the plants ... that comfy place you like to sit,
Their Joy and Beauty is unconditional, they think nothing of it!

Add your own verse if you wish - cheers now

Hey Xmeecosmic!

Thanks so much for your flower and plant verses - they're fun to read and nonsense to say - 'goed so' as they say hereabouts ... that's good.

Mums are not Marigolds and Marigolds are not Mums ... perhaps you were thinking about mesembryanthemums? And with a name like that who can blame us all for just calling them mums? Smile now.

Hope your garden is good and growing well and that you are getting ready for all the events (including winter) that the end of the year offers,

Cheers now

DAISIES

I found a daisy outside my door one day
Just as my friend was about to say
That these kinds of flowers were active and cheeky
And certainly did not behave at all garden meekly
No their colours and faces and petals and all
Make a statement for sure and heed your call
To be fresh and willing and pretty and simple
Enough to make anyone smile with a dimple
There are big ones and small ones, happy and sad
But only when you have been careless and bad
By not watering or feeding the bushes as must
See a daisy, like anyone relies on your trust.

Next? Why not try PEACHES AND PLUMS

Cheers now

Hey there exmecosmic - you beat me to it! Anyway, I am not really a Nashian poet so here is my effort ...

Soft fruits I love best are peaches and plums
They were also a favourite I say of me mum’s
Like others we both liked that dripful sweet taste
We ate everything of course, even pips we’d not waste

See those we’d use smartly mulching along
A gardening habit we knew was not wrong
Ah the picking and stewing and making of jam
And days at the market, “…none left, sorry Ma’am."

But let’s get back to those peaches and plums
A definite favourite of me and me mum’s.
In my neck of the woods it’s a seasonal delight
At the end of the year, just so … mmm … well right!

So what's next? Anything goes of course but what about BERRIES?

Cheers now

Berries?

I is wary
of a berry.
If it's rasp
it makes me gasp
when the pips
pass my lips
and get stuck
in my teeth. That's yuk!

Hello,

Gee - it's been nearly a month since the last post on this thread, so we need to rectify that I say.
...............................................................

BUGS

If you were a bad bug
then you'd need a big hug
From the gardener who lugs
All those tools in the trugs
Since unearthed by the holes that she's dug.

But hugs are not given by trug-lugging gardeners
Who certainly are not the bad-bug yard pardoners.

If you get in their way
They spray.

...............................................................

Okay then, your turn - write on anything garden related or try

GARLIC

Cheers now

Hi there,

.................................................................

Garlic is easy to grow
But it's important to know
To ground the bulb the pointy side up
Or on your own plants you'll not sup.

.................................................................

Add a verse to the GARLIC above or How about GARDEN TOOLS?

Cheers

Gardening Tools

The green thumb gardening rules
For a green thumb gardening tools
Is to have the one right when you need it.

See, for garden things you must do
If your garden tools are too few
It's no good when you need to weed it.

Of course tools come in all shapes and sizes
And if you have them in one of their guises
They'll be there when you need to seed it.

Gifts of spades, forks, rakes and hoes
With instructions for use - no more woes
You'll be smiling for sure when you read it!

With planning and effort, sunshine and soil
Your tools will make gardening enjoyable toil
So you can exactly precisely and indeed it!

Not sure that this works but it was worth the try!

Okay, what about BEES next time around? Try please, ta.

Hiya,

BEES
One of life’s keys
Is to be as busy as the bees
That pollinate as they visit
And ask you “Why is it?”
You seem not to care
About what you have there
When you could plant the flowers
That will keep them for hours
Finding sweet nectar as fare
And sharing pollen everywhere.
So the plants you have growing
Should be there with your knowing
Just what blooms they prefer
To make magic occur
Blooming for butterflies is easy
So too, grow choices buzz bee-zy
Add some thought and some dare,
C’mon show that you care

… and give those around you time to stand and stare!
...............................................................

Join in - add your own about Bees or let's go for PANSIES. In Afrikaans they have a charming name - Gesiggies - which means little faces.

Cheers

Pansies

Look! What you can see's
lots of purple pansies
and red, white and true blue
The choice is up to you
Maybe flowery suns
yellow, gold or orange ones

And do you think
perhaps some pink
They are quite
the rainbows of delight,
no airs and haughty graces
Smile at your pansy pack
and their little faces
smile back.

Ogden may have written something like this below ... hopefully anyway!

Lots of Pansies in my hansies
are just as nice as hansies of Tansies.

How about writing on COMPOST - and for an extra test make it a touch educational?

Okay then, cheers
