In order to write successfully in a certain genre, you must know the unwritten rules – in short, what the readers in that genre want to see. This is overlooked by countless writers who either jump eagerly into a specific genre without researching it first, or knowingly try to break the rules.

Hi Val,

Great article! My genre is spirituality and Christian. I've read many Christian living books and even how to books in the genre.

I loved the fact of knowing about the rules and then going against them if that is a choice. We would tell our children learn the rules first before breaking them or finding a shortcut. It just makes sense to learn the right way before doing it another way.

Thank you, Grace! I appreciate the comment. You put it very well: learn the right way of doing things, and then you have some point of comparison from which to make choices. I don't think people would listen if anyone told them that there is only one absolute way to do things. I think we all have a natural instinct to want to question methods as an ongoing way to improve things.
