Did you know that there is a unicorn constellation? Certainly, Monoceros isn't a classical constellation, and it's almost too faint to see. But it has a lot of interesting stars and other objects in it.

Monoceros the Unicorn

This is how the constellation Monoceros was represented in 18th century Urania's Mirror. It always seems, at first glance, as though the dog (Canis Minor) is having a ride. But it's just the constellation next door.

From this diagram, you can tell that Monoceros is probably faint. There aren't any bright stars shown for it. But January is a good time to see the Unicorn if you have a clear dark sky. Most of it is tucked inside the Winter Triangle, which is highly visible.

I have seen the Winter Triangle a few times recently, but seen nothing inside it. (Didn't remember to pack my binoculars, so I don't know if they would have made any of the stars of Monoceros visible.)

Astrophotographer Ignacio Diaz Bobillo has captured this superb image of the dusty nebula NGC 2170 in Monoceros. The nebula reflects the light of nearby hot stars, with blue reflection nebulae, a red emission region and dark nebulae blocking the light. It's part of Mon R2, a giant stellar nursery about 2400 light years away.
