September 21 at about 9.50 PM tonight EDT, the flight controllers for MAVEN will start the procedure to get the spacecraft into its Mars orbit.
Bruce Jakosky from the University of Colorado Boulder is the principal investigator for MAVEN. He says the "mission focuses on answering questions about where did the water that was present on early Mars go, about where did the carbon dioxide go. These are important questions for understanding the history of Mars, its climate, and its potential to support at least microbial life."
