I just finished a library book - DK Get Started Yoga by Nita Patel. I wasn't impressed. All the models are slim and white, and they don't even mention the real names of the poses anywhere. I have so many other books that cover this ground more thoroughly.

What books do you guys use?

The next one I was reading was Yoga Basics by C. Alexander Simpkins. Again, not too impressed. Small black-and-white photos don't illustrate the poses well.

I have read a bunch of yoga books. So many of them show models as you described who can do the poses so perfectly. Which is fine to know how the poses ultimately would look. I think it does a disservice, though, to the rest of us who can only hope to ever reach the perfect pose way in the future.

Yoga is about learning your body and honoring it. I think these perfect models may turn many people off yoga because they say to themselves that they could never do that. However, it is not about reaching the perfect pose, but improving and stretching where you start from and enjoying the benefits of what you can do.

Lisa, what kind of yoga book are you looking for? Something pretty with pictures of poses, something with really good descriptions, something with Sanskrit, a certain style of yoga?

I literally have over an 100 yoga books. I was a teacher for many years. The yoga "Bible" is B.K.S. Iyengar's "Light on Yoga". It is not fancy, the pictures are black and white but it has exact instructions of almost every pose you could ever think of. Of course he teaches Iyengar style yoga. It has practice programs and also a lot of instructions for pranayama. It's the classic.

PS- I've never heard of the authors you mentioned.
