We just bought a new car (a Kia Optima) and we used several of these tactics to find it - although we did it sort of backwards.

My husband visited car dealerships and looked at what interested him, then came back and checked out the various vehicles on the internet. Then when he had it narrowed down to a few that he felt were promising, he took me with him to see what I felt comfortable in.

As long as you and/or your husband followed some sort of logical process, the order is not necessarily important.

While gas mileage, safety, comfort and other variables are important; you need to insure you like the looks of a new car also.

Buying a new or used car is such a pain. My cousin recently bought a used car, and he experienced lot of hassle - what with car inspection, paperwork, insurance and car's condition in general. And then, while searching for cars online, filtering through the scam replies. Personally, I feel, buying a new car is much more easier than buying an old one.
