This sandwich is very flavorful. The artisan meats and olive salad add richness.

This sandwich sounds great and I never had one so I am eager to try it. I just have to check for the olive salad locally, and if I can't find it I will place an order online for the one you used, Connie. I think I would really enjoy this sandwich. I do like all the meats already!

HI Connie,
I was wondering what you were going to make with the mortadella. Superb choice!
The one and only time that I was in New Orleans, I more than satisfied my obsessive-compulsive visionary stomach quest with the likes of such traditional faire as gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etoufee, red beans and rice and, of course, beignets covered with copious amounts of powdered sugar.
However, for me, the real culinary stars of that gustatory journey were two sandwiches. I had thought that the fried oyster poboy that I had was among the best sandwiches that I had ever consumed. Yet, the humongous muffeletta that I purchased at the Central Grocery Co., home of the "original" muffeletta, even surpassed that scrumptious poboy.
Thanks for writing the article as it elicited many delightful foodie memories.

Thanks edwardd1! The sandwich was surprisingly easy to make using the ingredients that I found shopping at Costco. I knew that they had cappicola, so I thought that mortadella was a possibility. Boy, was I surprised to find that Volpi Trio that had all of the specialty meats. Add that to the Pickle Guy's Mufalata Olive Spread, and I was set to go.
I did not find muffeletta bread. The first one that I tried was the ciabatta roll. It was just too chewy and detracted from the meat, cheese, and olive salad. The focaccia was great. What would you recommend, since you have had the "real thing" from Central Grocery Co.?

Hi Connie,
You must be a mind reader as in my previous post I had written "the one aspect of the sandwich that set it apart from all others was the bread used," but I deleted it for one reason or another.
Not wanting to be overly dogmatic but... For someone who had the "real thing" at Central Grocery Co., my suggestion would be making your own muffelleta bread, remembering to top it with loads of sesame seeds. The primary reason for that is the sandwich is best assembled ahead of time so that the olive oil and liquid from the olive mixture can be absorbed by the bread and nothing fits that bill like that specialized bread (hence, the name).

Has anybody tried the Muffeletta Recipe? What did you think?
I love the lighter version.

I used Classic Mufeletta from That Pickle Guy on my cheese sandwich today. It really put some jazz into that plain sandwich!
