SciFi because it is a feasible stretch of the imagination, while Fantasy is just that -- complete sensory overload imagination without any grounding in the concrete.

Thanks for chiming in Burt! I love your answer.

I feel the same way. Science fiction is just those few steps away from science fact.

Although I do love fantasy as well. It is just easier to be in awe of those films where you go, "Could we do that one day?"

Spooky part is that we've probably already did that 40 years ago, and are just finding out in 'Fantasy and SciFi Films'.

The Good vs. Evil -- protagonist / antagonist -- love triangle themes are so lame though.. there is only about 7 ways to tell a story also the Apocalyptic stuff -- it's all the same stuff.

But, the relationships between humans is the key factor to any good SciFi -- but these days to be honest, I like to be left alone with my own thoughts in such a media intense world and only like to watch documentaries like Modern Marvels on the History Channel.

There's people who claim we've had real Stargates for a long time, and also thriving civilization beneath the surface for a long, long, time.

Hollow Earth theory, Admiral Byrd flying into it and the like.

Most of this stuff is true just so preposterous to our outer minds that we just can't wrap our head around it.

Although my favorite is SciFi, I still enjoy a good Fantasy every now and then. Sometimes I just need to be taken away from reality and dwell in another world!

Speaking of which; how would you guys classify "Star Wars"? It is a space movie - so one would think SciFi. However it takes place in another galaxy, another reality one might say. So that would make it a Fantasy, right? The same could be said for "Dune".

I would call both Star Wars and Dune science-fiction because of the presence of technology, and medieval-type films/books or films/books based on magic to be fantasy. But I see your point about both Star Wars and Dune being set in made-up worlds and containing elements of the fantastic.

Interesting answer. I'm going to make a separate thread about the difference between SciFi and Fantasy. I think we have a whole other conversation here!
