Trichotillomania, also known as hair pulling disorder, is a diagnosis given to people who have an irresistible urge to pull out the hair from their scalp or other parts of the body. Often thought to be an anxiety or obsessive-compulsive type disorder, it is actually an impulse control disorder.

My cousin experienced a mild case of this during his high school years. He used to pull out hairs from the top of his scalp until there was a silver dollar sized bald spot. He pulled the hairs out one-by-one when he was frustrated with playing his computer games.

He no longer has this disorder, thankfully.

I have a mild case of this even now.

For a long while it was thought to be a very rare disorder, but current research is pointing toward a higher rate of occurrence. I came across two cases within one school year.
