I thought this article might be of interest.

I experienced this sometimes when I worked in offices.

Hi Grace,

I read the article link. I lived and worked in California for 22 yrs before moving to NY 18 month ago. I have to say that, after reading this article, it could have been describing me.

I am married with twin girls and for a lengthy period had a teenage daughter at home too. I was ALWAYS asked to work extra days, or stay late, and do you really need the time off (often begging for it)! So, to me I don't see this ladies platform as discriminatory. It's maybe she is great at what she does and they don't want the not so great's to stand in while she is gone.

That is my experience. Very interesting. Thanks for posting this.

I love your site by the way smile I'm a MEGA fan of mysteries:)

Hi Allyson,

I think it's probably different here in the USA. When I worked in offices in the UK before moving over here, it was usually we single and / or childfree women who were expected to take up the slack if extra hours were required. Men - even the single ones - never seemed to get extra work thrown their way. Maybe the managers thought they had better things to do!

My American husband says this is a nation of workaholics, so perhaps expectations are bigger for all employees, whatever their circumstances.

Glad to hear that you're a lover of mysteries too!

I totally understand your comments...I should have mentioned I was born in England and moved to California at 29 yrs old as a single parent and married an American man.

I lived in Yorkshire, I don't know where you lived though. But my husbands (I had 2 there, lol) always worked long hours when I didn't. It is like you said, it's different in the U.S. Very interesting.

I lived for over 20 years in Bradford! Can't say that I miss the city at all, or the weather, but I do sometimes feel nostalgic for the moors and the Dales.

Small world!

You have got to be kidding me! I was born in Bradford and lived there until I came to the U.S. A small world it is! And, yes I miss the Dales and Ilkley. My mum, dad and sister moved out of Bradford years ago and live there now.

I grew up hiking in the Lake District with my parents. I miss that the most. And the city is a shame now from what I hear from my family.

Well, I'll go t't'foot of our stairs! I had a flat in Frizinghall, which was okay when I was there, don't know what it's like now. My brother still lives on the Allerton/Wilsden border, and he says central Bradford is quite rundown now.

I loved Ilkley. At weekends I used to drive out to Ilkley or Haworth for a walk and some fresh air.

It's lovely to live near the ocean and have lots of sunshine, but there's something about slightly damp moorland that can't be beat!

LOL! Yes Bradford is run down now that's why my family moved to the lovely outskirts. Now I feel like I have "real" family at BOL. I may bother you often....lol...
