The Bank of England has revealed that Jane Austen will grace the ten-pound note. The decision is thought to be in response to a great outcry over the removal of Elizabeth Fry, a social reformer, on the five pound note. Fry will be replaced by Winston Churchill. The new 5 and 10 pound notes will appear in 2016. Austen replaces Charles Darwin on the 10 pound note. She joins a small group of only three other women who have been featured on British currency. In addition to Elizabeth Fry they are Queen Elizabeth II and Florence Nightingale.
