German by birth, William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781, using a telescope he had made himself. I recently visited the Herschel Museum of Astronomy in Bath and learned a lot about a man whose discoveries are not regularly taught in schools, even though his work changed the boundaries of science.
