One of the earliest and most salient lessons in integrity that I imparted to edwardd1 was quite similar to the message contained in the following quote, but in addition to the word "ridicule" I would add wrath.
“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.†― Frederick Douglass
The moral message of this quote is a segue and prelude to the telling of the "The Chef Johann Schmidt Story."

Being true to yourself is the only way to happiness and peace. Surely there will be some who will disagree and try to change you or make you feel badly for your choices, but you have to remain firm in your convictions.
Great quote!

Hi Debbie,
Both of us sure agree with your view about the path to "happiness and peace."
To one and all,
Which of these philosophical statements do you (after much angst and/or rumination, of course) ethically or existentially consider to be the most profound, if not the most relevant?
“To be is to do" - Socrates and Immanuel Kant
"To do is to be" - Jean Paul Sartre
"Do Be Do Be Do" - Frank Sinatra

The first one, "To be is to do," moves me.

The definite article "the" would be redundant with hoi polloi...kind of like saying HIV virus. It's done all of the time, but it doesn't parse well.

Thanks Connie and Debbie. Let's make it a trilogy of agreement about "to be is to do" as it also floats my boat or as I am wont to say, The Good Ship Integrity. From my perspective, it epitomizes the actualization of integrity as it implies that who you are is dependent upon the consistency of your behavior/action.
Connie is right on as saying the hoi polloi/the the masses is redundant as it is believed that in ancient Greece hoi was used as a definite article. To confirm this, one needs to look no further than the 1935 movie starring the Three Philosophers, er, I mean the Three Stooges which was titled "Hoi Polloi." Who knew that Moe, Larry and Curly were ancient Greek scholars? Which leads me to believe that Curley's utterances of "woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo!!!" were much more universally profound than originally believed.

WHAT IS?
What is Being true to yourself?
What is Having your own personal code of ethics?
What is Treating others as you would like to be treated?
What is Respecting the importance of all life forms?
What is Taking up just causes even though they may not be popular?
What is Never saying you did something just because the power-to-be wanted it?
What is Valuing idealism more than pragmatism?
What is Desiring fairness over status?
What is What you think is what you do, consistently?
What is Cherishing the truth over materialism?
What is Seeing beyond yourself?
What is Taking responsibility for one's actions?
What is A way of life and not just a character trait?
Integrity is what should be but, alas,is very often not what is.

In preparation to the telling "The Johann Schmidt Story" and other ethical dilemma anecdotes, I wanted to have you start thinking about what personal code of ethics you may have and, if you have one, what is its origin be you a theist or non-theist. So, I decided to commit plagiarism,er, now that would not be ethical would it?-anyways one cannot plagiarize themself, can they? Consequently, I am re-posting with slight modifications a post that I created that originally appeared on the A/A forum (and went relatively, to be honest, no make that absolutely, nowhere!).
Do you have a personal code of ethics? If so, what is it? How did you arrive at it? Is it fluid or fixed? Is it absolutist or relativistic? Do you consciously apply it day-to-day? Does expediency ever factor in whether you utilize it or not? Do you think that it is applicable to all cultures? Do you feel that you are doing the best that you can in living up to it?
Next, I am making an assumption that if you have a personal code of ethics that you have incorporated some of the following tenets into it:
From Richard Dawkins, a well-known British atheist, his own TEN COMMANDMENTS:
1) Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you.
(2) In all things, strive to cause no harm.
(3) Treat your fellow human beings, your fellow living things, and the world in general with love, honesty, faithfulness and respect.
(4) Do not overlook evil or shrink from administering justice, but always be ready to forgive wrongdoing freely admitted and honestly regretted.
(5) Live life with a sense of joy and wonder.
(6) Always seek to be learning something new.
(7) Test all things; always check your ideas against the facts, and be ready to discard even a cherished belief if it does not conform to them.
(8) Never seek to censor or cut yourself off from dissent; always respect the right of others to disagree with you.
(9) Form independent opinions on the basis of your own reason and experience; do not allow yourself to be led blindly by others.
(10) Question everything.
From the Bible's TEN COMMANDMENTS in abbreviated form:
1. You shall not worship any other god but YHWH.
2. You shall not make a graven image.
3. You shall not take the name of YHWH in vain.
4. You shall not break the Sabbath.
5. You shall not dishonor your parents.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not commit perjury.
10. You shall not covet.
From the Golden or Silver Rule:
1. One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. 2. One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated.
From Shakespeare/Hamlet:
To thine own self be true.
From The Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism in which #'s 3-5 encompass ethical conduct:
1. Right View Wisdom 2. Right Intention 3. Right Speech Ethical Conduct 4. Right Action 5. Right Livelihood 6. Right Effort Mental Development 7. Right Mindfulness 8. Right Concentration
From the Five ethical categories of Islam: The obligatory The prohibited The supererogatory The disfavored The indifferent
In your personal code of ethics do have you any tenets that you have incorporated that were not covered in the above?
A couple of mine that I have incorporated into my personal code of ethics are what I call"The Adult Model" (which is if you agree to do something you do it but if you are not able to you communicate that in advance and you, with the agreement and/or knowledge of those affected, modify your goals/time frame) and the "Integrity Rule" (moral integrity can never be taken away. An individual can only give it away (and that should never even be considered as an option!).
