Many attitudes held by Americans do not promote the idea of academic excellence in either parents or children. Parents who want their children to acquire a broad, humane education have to make an effort to resist negative attitudes they and their children are immersed in every day.

How far are you willing to go to protect your children from the negative effects of our popular culture? Parents and Popular Culture

The unlimited television/computer time is the most insidious distraction from learning that there is today. Parents need to regulate these things. Few do, because they enjoy them too much to limit the tv or computer for themselves. Television needs to be planned viewing. Computer use needs to be educational. Period.

Connie,
Hear, hear! Trouble is, we fall into habits and we tend to accept what goes on in our surroundings without much question. Educating children takes effort and a certain amount of sacrifice on the part of parents. I recall a parent-teacher conference in which the parents told me how relieved they were to be able to turn their child over to the school because they "couldn't do a thing with him."

Well, Maeve, that is just sad. I know that there are kids who are little fireballs when they are young. Parents don't want to deal with the tantrums and cave in on everything. Then, when the child is in charge of the household in middle school, they try to rein him in. Good luck with that! It is a sad situation.
