Have you ever used the wrong word in a sentence? This is often referred to as a Freudian slip. A Freudian slip, also called parapraxis, is a verbal mistake that reveals a repressed belief, thought, or emotion.

Is it really an unconscious desire or wish, or could it just be a slip with no meaning?

Jung shared Freud's predilection for slips of the tongue, even though they disagreed on other things. I'm a fan of Jung moreso, personally.

I believe it would vary with the person and context. Even if it's something happening below conscious thought - the panic answer of "oh no cigars are phallic" seems too simple a hangup. Previous conversations about cigars/smoking, if they view cigars as a sign of class, maybe they kicked an addiction but favored cigars... Psychoanalysis just seems so personal (and case-by-case) to me.

Am also disinclined to believe that all verbal/nonverbals are significant. That's just my inner math nerd talking, though smile

Good article!

Leif,
Thank you for taking the time to read my article. I'm glad you liked it! I lean toward all behavior is significant...probably due to my mental health background and what I do for a living. smile
However, I can see where there are times when a recent thought or conversation can lead one to make a verbal slip that is just that and nothing more.

I had fun writing that article since many topics in mental health are no laughing matter.
Thanks for your feedback. I really love hearing what people think ...

It was a pleasure smile

That is interesting. It seems like there's just so many variables at play, how does one discern what each behavior's significance might be?

I love hearing what people think too! Though, I must admit, I'm but an amateur where people's thoughts are concerned. Your expertise is something I admire. It's awesome that you had fun writing the article, too. So many people I've been around who take to mental health as a study are so serious about it. All the cognitive biases I've been learning about recently - it's really great inspiration to laugh at what curious, and curiously intricate, creatures we are.
