So, you know how people talk all the time about body image? For me, it's face image. The thing with me though is that (everyday people, not just models and celebrities) I find myself really ugly than most people. The thing with me is that I refuse to put makeup on because it's a waste of time and money. How do I get myself to stop focusing on my face a lot.

Msac...it makes me so sad to read your post. I wish you could look in the mirror and see your beauty. I know we are all our own worst critics and see our flaws first. But I have rarely met anyone I would call ugly. Everyone has a uniqueness that makes them beautiful. Honestly, I am much more interested in someone that may seem 'average' than to look at someone who has a cookie-cutter look. I will bet that you have qualities that are uniquely you...that make you interesting and beautiful. Look for those things and then celebrate them! Smiles and hugs to you

No one's face is perfect, i think you need to find the advantages of your face and make up. Be confident for yourself.

I am very sorry to hear that.

I have low self-esteem, started when young (i honestly dont remember having any) and I highly doubt this will ever change for me and of course my physical appearance was one thing that I had trouble with but a few years ago I found a way to stop focusing on this. I stopped being down on my look when I saw that Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Aniston, Maria Sharapova, Rihanna and Beyonce were called beautiful. I find them ugly so them being deemed hot helps me with my look because if this is how we are supposed to look when we are beautiful then I am glad to be ugly. Rarely I look at myself and feel sad but I just have to thing about these so-called beauties and I immediately stop feeling bad about my appearance.

I wish I could help you. Hopefully you will find a way to stop feel like that about your face or someone that will help you accept your face.

Masc - I know how it feels to think that some part of me is ugly. I too for years did not wear makeup, since I too, felt why bother? It hurts deep in our soul to feel that way. Is there some part of your body that you do like? Maybe you have beautiful hands? Start by loving what you can about yourself and your self acceptance will grow. As others have already said, we are all unique, I am positive that you have beauty. It is my hope that you can find it within yourself. You asked, How do I get myself to stop focusing on my face a lot, the best way I have found to stop focusing on myself is to shift my focus to what I can do to help others. When we lose ourselves in the service of someone else, we can't help but feel better about ourselves. All the best to you.

Other people feel ugly if they keep on comparing their face to those of others. I rarely found or met someone I can call ugly. Can you tell us why do you find yourself really ugly? do you have acne? do you have big pores, etc? well, I tell you, some women, even celebrities, have "ugly" days too. Just enhance your face by applying right amount of make-up.

Valerie,

I love this topic. All my life I have never thought of whether I was pretty or ugly. People on numerous occasions throughout the years have said the same thing to me, "you're so pretty and you don't even know it!". I never understood what they meant by that really.

I have never been a heavy make up person and only apply enough to highlight my eyes usually. I will be 54 yrs old on 9/22 and now every day for the last few years I look in the mirror and feel sad sometimes, because if I don't put on any make up when I'm home I feel I look as old as my mother. My mother I see as beautiful always, and she was/is. I work hard, had twins in my early 40's and I think that sometimes that all caught up to me.

I get so caught up trying to "catch up" with the house, kids and husband, I forget about me. I know it's wrong and I sometimes try harder. Even when I Skype with my parents in England, my dad always says "Hi, beautiful!" OK gonna cry now. lol

Hi Everyone, Great insights! I agree with Valerie, living in LA and having the opportunity to work with what are considered to be some of the most beautiful people in the entertainment industry, believe me, they have the same insecurities as the rest of us. It is funny, there is one celebrity (who will remain nameless) is absolutely stunning in person. Amazingly beautiful, but she is horrific to work with and that takes away all the physical beauty. Then there are ladies like Ellen Degeneres that have the most beautiful smile and she seems genuinely pleased to talk with you. Her beauty far surpasses the others. Disclaimer time, I know Allyson from working with her as a caterer in LA. Two things a) Happy Birthday! and B) you are so beautiful. You always made coming into work a joy with your cheerfulness and your smile. I hope you find the time to take care of yourself and realize that your dad knows best. He sees what we see, a beautiful amazing woman.

Hi, For the longest time I felt ugly. It took years of therapy (because of suicidal thoughts) to realize that it was all in my head. Now I even see myself as being pretty. I was suffering from a type of dismorphic syndrome! Something worth thinking about.

Hi Arialta,

I have never had suicidal thoughts about the way I look, however, I do look in the mirror sometimes and think I'm not pretty anymore - I'm 54 so age is only my factor.

Nevertheless I get comments at work by coworkers and customers and they all say the same thing - "Hi, pretty lady!"

Other people see you differently than you see yourself. So I go with it - it makes me feel good! Your personality is what makes you beautiful. smile
