Are terrariums considered container gardens or are they another category of gardening altogether?

Last week, I found this adorable round, clear plastic container. It looks like a very large Christmas bulb ornament with a screw-on lid and handle. I got this urge to turn it into a miniature terrarium.

At first, I thought I'd made a model of the Lord of the Rings' Bag End where Bilbo and Frodo lived and I might do that with another container, but I would love to have a minature living ecosystem that I can take with me.

Any experience with terrariums, anyone?

Hello Lori and all, Yes I would certainly say that terrariums are container gardens and such lovely ones at that. Any glass container can be used (plastic too) and they are very easy to maintain and make up - not even a weekend project unless you count going shopping for the plants and supplies. The main thing is not to overwater and to choose like-minded plants with similar needs especially light and sunshine. I have a friend who made one up of miniature ivy and pepperomia - and it has been going for over two years now. She has it in a hobby-made glass jar with a lid and it really looks nice - simple and alive and green and textured. Have you tried one? You can even do a terrarium with cacti. Hmm - come on everybody, how about making a Valentine's terrarium? Why not? If you did, what plants would you choose? Let us know ... cheers now, Lestie, Container Gardens. t
