Do chopping onions make you cry? Personally I react really badly whenever I chop an onion, so I researched all the ways you can chop onions without crying, and this week's article is the result of that research. Personally, I use an onion chopper, shown at the bottom of the article and just cut very fast.

I did for a while wear swimming goggles that I kept in a kitchen drawer until one of my children needed them for swimming, and I haven't seen them since. It did work, although it felt a little funny.

I read about lighting a candle, I don't know if that would work. Let me know if you've used any of these methods with any success.

When I wore contact lenses, they offered some onion protection but since I switched to eyeglasses--oy!

I know that some prep chefs don those goggles to prevent eye stinging when chopping onions.

As far as the candle goes, I wonder if the fumes from the flame intercept the onion fumes? Freezing the onion will keep the onion juices from spraying.

Thanks for the tips!

Very rarely. The onion has to be very strong for it to make me cy. Most of the time when I do cry when cutting an onion I have itchy eyes to start that day and that becomes the reason why I did cry while cutting that onion.

Connie the Mrs. sayz:

Peel the onion under water and keep your hands wet while you're slicing it.

I wonder if by peeling them under water you might lose some of the onion flavor?

I doubt if there would be flavor loss during the short period of peeling. Besides, only the outer layer would be affected in the peeling process.

Some onions have a super strong, almost bitter flavor so soaking them in water actually can have a beneficial effect.

I only buy the sweet vidalia onions now so I don't have problems with irritated eyes or tears. The stronger spanish onions used to irritate my eyes. I haven't bought them in the last several years.
