Jilly, there was a time when we were a one-car family. My husband worked several jobs and I was at home with three little ones. I felt stranded because I had to wait for him to come home in order to get the babies to the doctor or to the stores.
I'd walk the kids to the grocery market nearby and to the schools and park but that was it as far as where we'd go. The bus system here is sketchy plus it was too hard to get the stroller or wheelchair on board.
We managed.
It is so convenient to have my own car. Could I give it up? I suppose. But I'm the designated driver to get my elderly folk to appointments now and my DH likes not having to drive me to boring places he'd rather not go.
Stores are within walking distances and we have the flexibility to schedule appointments when my DH can drive me or lend me his car. We discussed downsizing to one car but he said he'd rather I have it in case of emergency.

Lori, I agree that a car is very hard to give up. It makes life so convenient; we can be helpful to others; not everyone can walk or bike.
I've been regularly using my Spending thread (in this forum) to stay accountable and watch my spending habits...and it seems I don't want to give up wine.
Life would be cheaper without wine and beer. I wonder how much I would save in a year?

Life would be cheaper without wine but would it be as enjoyable to you? Or would saving the money make you happier?

I suppose that we can all learn to live without that which we love, but I would be hard-pressed to give up my husband, sons, or pets. Life would be so sad.

Sometimes it does not take a lot to make someone happy or feel good so when it's something like wine (or Pepsi in my case..haha) and you do have the money to buy some sometimes then I say do it. Life is short anyway so when you are lucky enough to have found something you enjoy enjoy it!

They are called "affordable luxuries." The little things that make us feel rich.

It seems that wine is my one 'affordable' luxury. I do buy bottles that are $3-$4. I know that sounds terrible to some people, but it's all i can do.
If I get four of those bottles at Walgreens, I also get 10% off the total. At CVS you have to get 6 to get the 10%.
If I had, to i would give up the wine. Actually, I'd make my own, which I've done and is actually quite cheap if you aren't too picky about it.
I smell an article coming. :-)

I had the option recently to get rid of my unlimited data plan on my iphone for a cheaper plan recently, and I found I just couldn't give it up.
I don't care about talk time, since I don't like phone calls, but don't touch my data plan or texting!
