Would someone choose or chews a new car? Would one wear a coat when the weather is Chile, chili, chilli, or chilly? When you practice firing your gun would you chute or shoot it?

Another good article, Lisa - I enjoy your “confusing words” explorations.

But I have two comments on Chile/chilli/chili

(1) That Cincinnati concoction in the picture looks revolting! :-)

(2) I'm ok on Chile the country - and there is also the Spanish spelling of the hot pepper, which is lower case chile. But chili and chilli can both refer to the hot pepper itself, its powdered form, or the dish (con carne, though can be done with vegetables only) seasoned with it. The usual American spelling is with one 'l' and the usual British spelling is with two.

Agree - that picture looks nothing like any chilli (or chili) I've ever seen, looks like a mound of grated cheese frown

On 2 there is confusion about chilli/chili in the article which says that A chilli is a hot pepper but also says that Chili is a spicy stew made with chili peppers, garlic, cumin, garlic, onions, and ground beef.

I don't think there can properly be a difference in the spelling of the dish and the pepper because the proper name of the dish, as I understand it, is chilli-con-carne, i.e. chilli with meat. So however you spell the name of the pepper should also be the way you spell the first part of the name of the dish.

It has been years since I made Cincinnati-style chili, and I realize it doesn't make a pretty picture, but it is rather delicious. If I had made some to take a picture of there would be sour cream on top of it along with all the cheese and the oyster crackers. There just weren't that many pubic domain pictures of chili to choose from that I liked.

And I have made an addition that say the spellings of chili and chilli can be interchangeable.

And thank you, Mona. Even after living in England for a few years, I didn't realize that the preferred spelling of chili for the British was chilli.

Discussing the spelling of Chile/Chilli/Chili, did you know that the government of the country of Chile also had difficulty.

In 2008 they issued a 50 peso coin with the name of their own country misspelled!

Wow! That would have been so embarrassing! I wonder just how much one of those coins would be worth now. That was a really interesting article. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. smile
