Here is one of the cosmic valentines from my Astronomy Pinterest board. It shows the Sun ejecting a lot of particles in a coronal mass ejection - in the shape of a heart! If they come our way, they can create beautiful northern lights. The white circle shows where the Sun is, since it has to be safely masked for the satellite to image it.

How would you make this heart on the Milky Way?

Julien Girard did it with a little flashlight during a 25-second exposure of the Milky Way at the Paranal observatory in Chile.

I love it!

This cute little heart is actually 120 m (395 ft) wide. It's a mesa on a crater floor in the Martian southern hemisphere.

In 2011 a NASA mission Stardust-NExT was due to meet Comet Tempel 1, inspiring this chocolate-themed rendezvous idea. Yum.

Oh My Mona, what a lovely time I have had looking at all of your cosmic hearts? It is almost spooky! Is there a geological reason for these - the shape is most certain in all cases - does the wind or what what (as they say here in SA) cause the particular configurations? Amazing is all I can say. That and send my friends to your site to see what they see.

So here is my Valentine's days message back to the cosmos - please make sure it gets there!

Astronomical Mona was oh so smart you'll agree
When she pinned her hearts up for all to see
They seemed to be small but "are not" said she
Those cosmic shapes are just awesome for people like me

Am fascinated and a tad overwhelmed with the wonders of the sky.

Lestie, I'm glad you've enjoyed the cosmic hearts. There's not really anything special about their formation. There are all kinds of shapes in nature and not many of them work out to be hearts - but humans are good at picking out patterns. Some things even look heart-shaped because of the viewing angle. But it's still fun.
