When I worked in the French Market, which is still there by the way, the young employees were a riot. One rather well-endowed girl just adored the cheesecake and whenever she worked at the desserts station, she would crouch down behind the counter for a while. I thought she was rearranging the plates in the refrigerator but nope. She always stood up with her mouth full of cheesecake!

I thought it was so funny, even though it *was* stealing from Mickey Mouse. frown

And once, the cooks in the back were horsing around and they took off one of the girls' shoe and plopped it into a vat of Jambalaya. They fished it out and were going to serve the pot until I made a fuss and told them that they would get into big trouble if they served that and someone got sick! I guess I was a party pooper at that time, but I really stood up for the customer.

I horsed around, too. As I trained new girls, I teased that we used horseradish packets to polish the brass. I demonstrated and lo and behold, the horseradish rendered a beautifully polished brass heat lamp for the food! My friends giggled...until the next day when the heat lamps got turned on and the entire restaurant filled with the awful smell of horseradish. No one could tell where it came from. I 'fessed up and my very kind supervisor only shook his head at me. smile

Lori,

Isn't if wonderful how Disney can bring such joy? Even though it has gotten really expensive - it's still magic, I don't care how many time I look through the same stores and the same pins at the same rides - it's so much fun!

Disneyland employee trivia: Young children are not allowed backstage (any area that is not open to the guests). It is traumatizing for little ones to see "Mickey Mouse" headless when the character is taking a break without is costume head on!

Even though the food workers have physically taxing jobs, they get fewer breaks than the ride operators since the ride operators have to be "alert" when working the attractions. That always bugged us. We just saw the ride operators as sitting on the bottoms all day long! But I suppose the boredom could cause them to hit the wrong buttons!

In the past, employees were offered Disney credit cards that deducted the total due from paychecks. Many of the employees were Disneyana addicts and spent their entire paychecks on Disney stuff.

Disney used to "type-cast" employees and put the blacks in jungle areas, the Asians in the Tiki Room and Tahitian Terrace, the muscle men in Pirates and canoe rides, the old women on Main Street, etc. They got in trouble for that as years passed so they no longer do that.

Things that are gone from Disneyland:

*Sky buckets. People kept trying to jump to their deaths.
*Fantasia ice cream. It was a blend of ice cream flavors, one of which was pistachio.
*Sunkist juice bar. Disney phased out all of their old licensees such as Sunkist and Carnation for financial reasons. It was in Disney's financial best interest to hook up with other corporate sponsors with updated contracts.
*Country Bear Jamboree ride. Replaced with a Winnie-the-Pooh ride.
*Boat ride. Nothing replaced it. It is just a pretty waterway now.
*People mover. It was replaced with a "high speed" rocket rods ride that lasted only a few seasons.
*Carnation Plaza. No ice cream counter. frown
*American Egg House restaurant on Main Street. Currently a photo opp place.

LOL! Not the queen, just a loyal serf. smile

And about royalty, did you know that the castles in Disneyland and Disney World are different? The Disneyland castle is from Sleeping Beauty while the castle in Disney World is Cinderella's castle. Cinderella's castle has a restaurant in it while Sleeping Beauty's castle is a walk-through attraction that features windows filled with scenes from the movie.

Disneyland is still renovating more areas. The old Carnation Plaza is gone. Coming soon will be an extension of Fantasyland with a faerie-themed theater. I miss the old Fantasia flavor ice cream that cannot be found anywhere in the world now...wait, unless it is in Disney World...hmmmm.

And they are constantly updating the food offerings to entice the annual passholders. For a limited time, the French Market is serving Shrimp Corn Fritters with a spicy coleslaw.
