Excellent advice. I definitely think that giving them plenty of time is a good idea. If you request a letter and need it the same day, you are infringing on their schedule. If you ask too far in advance, they may forget.

Also, not everyone may want to give you a letter of recommendation just because you worked for them or were their student. Think about your relationship with that person first, before asking.
