The CDC reports that binge drinking is a problem for as many as 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 8 women. Sometimes women binge drink as a coping mechanism. Unfortunately, this kind of self-medication can lead to longer term health problems.

Barbara,
You gave some great suggestions for those that struggle with this issue. Usually, as you pointed out, this type of behavior suggests deeper issues and unresolved pain. If talking with a friend or family member does not lead to healing and change, then maybe seeking out the support of a professional therapist is needed.
