All is well -- no one hurt and no homes damaged. The little mountain is blackened and bare. I am watching the little critters and quail scurry around up there, lots of them.

ahhhh! Red-Eye Gravy, a southern favorite. Hold on, Burt, I will look in my down home cookin' recipe box.

Fry a fatty slice of ham until browned on both sides. Set cooked ham aside on a warm plate. Add half a cup of black coffee and some sugar to the ham drippings in pan, stir and scrape up all that good tasting ham flavor. Let mix come to a boil, tir and scrape constantly on sides and bottom of pan. Simmer and stir till a red eye forms in center of gravy -- the red eye forms when the gravy is reduced, thus the name. smile The gravy should be rather thin.

Hope that tastes good, Burt. A good Virginia ham is really good for this gravy making.

I feel bad for all the little critters who lost their homes in the fire. Poor things.....

The critters seem to be ok. Their homes are gone or uncovered now. I can see all the holes and little tunnels under the boulders where all the brush used to be. The critters have been running all over the mountain just like every other day. I tossed out some penuts, cheerios, and a mixed bag of salad greens. They ate it all up. smile

If anybody's around this morning I just cooked up a bunch of buttermilk pancakes, with and without blueberries. I've got some sausage and bacon ready, butter, and real maple syrup to go along with those hot pancakes. There's hot coffee and the tea kettle is whistling. Breakfast is on for the hungry folk. We can sit around on the front porch and have a chat before we start our day, all while enjoying this great breakfast.

I think I see Granpappy coming up the hill. He must have smelled all the cooking going on. His sense of smell is about as good as his old hound dog's. I'd better get him a plate.

Come and get it!!!

Whew! Parents and siblings were out all week. That's a lot of socializing. Now I am puttering in Phyllis' flower garden and humming tunelessly to myself. Thank you for the breakfast plate, though, Debbie. That was really thoughtful. smile

That was very nice of you Debbie, thanks. I bet Granpappy really enjoyed his breakfast. He has a big smile today.

Putter away, Jilly. The garden needs some good care today.
