To write a movie review or film review essay, the easiest thing to do is to have a checklist of points to work through. Then add a couple of cited critics responses, and your own personal experiences. There is an example and checklist here:

Thank you for the information and link - a lot of good information. It's easy to read a review, but writing one is quite another ballgame.

Thanks Edie, just hope people do bother to read down to the end to find the list! I actually think most ordinary family people really want to know whether the film was any good ! - and if it would suit them and their companions/family, not always all the techie stuff. For example, my daughters and I loved The Girl With A Pearl Earring ....but couldn't tell you anything about the history/cast etc.

In thinking about how to write a movie review last night, I considered the importance of the above points ie....personal recommendations! We put on 'Little Miss Sunshine' which looks like quite a light-hearted story, but the opening and themes were not at all suitable for the younger two!(Depressing/Morbid)- haven't got time to write a review today, but if I did, I would point that out first (ie audience it might be suitable for- can't always go by the ratings.)

Then I would go down through the checklist of points I made on my site article above.

Mine is to follow J.D. Salinger's guide. Never pretend. And say what you've observed. Stick to that and you'll get interesting results.
