Hello all and all,

What is the role of flowers during Diwali? What are the favourite flowers used? Colours? Types? Uses? Are flowers used at this time of the year only or are there other celebrations where flowers and blossoms are important too? Do you grow your own flowers or do you have to buy them?

Would love some answers! Thanks and say cheers

Flowers are a large part of any Indian function, weddings or ceremony -- especially religious ceremonies where they are offered as gifts to our pantheon of gods & goddesses. There is no restriction on types or colors -- however, the flowers must be fresh & clean :-) Once you have smelled a flower, it can be given to a god/goddess -- since it is "used" (you can then wear it in your hair :-)

I know Lord Ganesha (the elephant god) is partial to marigolds.

Indian women, especially in the South, adorn their hair & long braids with flowers daily.

Since India is tropical/subtropical climate, flowers are available throughout the year. There are many exotic varieties. Roses are used even in food. India is filled with huge flower markets & stalls if you don't have your own garden. You can buy ready made garlands almost anywhere at anytime.

Hope this helps & sorry for the delayed reply :-)
