As we have been hearing for a while now, the "new" Sherlock Holmes is coming to TV this fall. Thursday nights beginning Sept. 27th at 10:00 pm ET/PT on CBS.

Whoever coined it as "new" was not kidding - while actor Jonny Lee Miller is playing the new Sherlock Holmes, actress Lucy Liu is playing Dr. Joan Watson - definitely new.

The setting is also new as they will be working with the New York City police department helping with their most difficult cases.

I'm looking forward to this updated version of one of the most famous detective stories ever - what about you?

Edie,
Well, I watched the first episode. Can't say I was too enchanted. I'm a real Holmes fan. I love the London update with Benedict Cumberbatch. Can hardly wait for more. This one, however, does not please. It may be that London is too much of a character on its own to make a transplant to NYC successful. But there's also Jonny Lee Miller's strung-out interpretation and his unshaven, slovenly looks. Doyle's Holmes was often abrupt, but I can't imagine him causing a disruption at the opera.

I'll give it a second try, but I have a feeling that this is one that won't see me a third time.

We watched this one and it's definitely different. I've never watched or read many of the originals tho, so I liked this show all right.

Maeve and Boomer Girl, this version of Holmes is definitely different. Sometimes the old tried-and-true are the ones we enjoy the best.

Appreciate your comments. And, Maeve, I'm glad you are giving it another try and would like to hear your response.

Yes, old is truly gold. I didnt like this Monk/House version of SH, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would probably be offended!

I've not heard a lot of good reviews about this version. Has anyone else seen this show? Would love to hear what you think.

I do think it is interesting that they created a female Dr. Watson - how do you feel about that? Or, should they have stayed with the original concept?

We adore all the versions of Holmes. We've seen all the different movie versions, TV versions, and we watched House and Monk. I think Sir Arthur would have loved how much his ideas took off - he was quite the fan of innovation and trying new things!

This new version is definitely different, which is good. It brings yet a fresh new audience in to learning about Holmes and then studying all the different versions. With all the teasing about Holmes and Watson being sexually together (which the BBC version plays off on to my great delight) this promotes it on a different level.

I love that Watson has a brain. Some versions (and "many" versions, really) tend to play Watson as completely brainless. But he is, after all, a doctor, and therefore more educated and trained than the vast majority of humans. He is only "slow" compared with Holmes' brilliance. So I like that here Watson is shown as having that acuity.

We of course need an "audience stand-in" - i.e. someone Holmes can explain his brilliant theories to. That's what Watson is there for. But I don't think Watson was ever meant to be a dullard in the least, which some TV versions seem to lean him towards.

Holmes was always "on the fringe". In Victorian times his actions seemed wild. In modern times we see him as "normal" - which is a shame. We have lost his wildness. I think this new show regains his wildness and reminds us of what his character probably looked like to his contemporary audiences.

In some of the versions, Holmes is so full of drugs that he can hardly think straight. I understand they need a certain character trait, but it seems they carry it too far. How can he solve cases when he is so wasted? Also, not a good influence on younger people who may be watching. I do like this version, and you are right that is is written from a contemporary viewpoint.

I am enjoying the interplay between Holmes and Watson in the US version, I have a theory that whatever the most common ailment in the new is, such as autism spectrum disorder, is what makes up contemporary characters like the US Holmes, House and Monk. I think that explains the characteristics of the new Holmes. I'm not sure I like that, but I am enjoying the show.

The BBC version is simply marvelous.

And I too love that the Watsons in both are intelligent in their own right!

You made an interesting point regarding whatever the most common ailment in the news is, makes up contemporary characters. I've never thought of that, but it does make sense (as far as supposing that's what writers do). I'll have to keep my eyes open to see if indeed that is how they "update" the character.

I've always enjoyed the British Sherlock Holmes, especially the older versions.

In terms of drugs, the original Holmes was addicted to cocaine and morphine. So think about Jane Austen and stories like that - and then not too much later in time we suddenly have a "detective hero" who is using hard drugs. It was meant to be a hard boiled, rough, on-the-edge story for adults about a character who crossed the line.

I think in modern times we think of Sherlock Holmes stories as "gentle" and "cute" because they're set in "olden times". But in its day Holmes was a rough, fringe-of-society type of character, and I think a lot of that sense has gotten lost over the years. So I think some recent tellings are trying to regain that feel, which means they have to change up the characters to do that. If they simply have an old style man it doesn't feel "edgy" any more. Even the movies still have a dated, quaint feel to them.

I've never thought as Sherlock as gentle or cute, I read the original stories when I was young because both of my parents recommended them. My mom for literary reason, my dad as a psychologist. He considers them well ahead of their time as a character analysis study about being very intelligent and some of the personality disorders that can arise from that. Sherlock was always flawed, always a very dark character in a lot of ways. This is a better time in entertainment to show that side of his character, because anti-heroes and complicated characters are very popular. As far as Dr. Watson goes, he was always very smart in the books, not as smart as Sherlock, and not as troubled, and more mainstreamed in a way that people could understand and identify with him.

Dear Shala -

I definitely agree that in the original stories Sherlock was fairly dark, had his strengths and weaknesses, and was not quite "social".

I think in many ways that modern characters like House and Monk are very much like him. They often have their focus on the problem rather than on the people.

I can see House as very much like Holmes the way you explain above. The anti-hero, but in a very conflicted way - they both have drugs in common, for example.

I've always enjoyed the mystery part of the Holmes legacy, and in hindsight have generally ignored his drug use/abuse. I wonder how many others have done the same.

That's my objection to the CBS version of Holmes. For these script writers, the drug use and sleaziness takes precedence over intelligence and decency. It's the modern culture. Your comparison to House is apt. The CBS character is very like House. I find them equally repellant and unwatchable.

Dear Maeve -

We definitely all have our lines we draw, and that is great! We are all different people which means we have a nice variety of shows on TV that appeal to different groups.

For example, my boyfriend loves Dexter. I used to watch it, but I just can't watch it any more. I don't enjoy some of the violence. I try to live a peaceful and serene life, and the violence upsets me too much. So now I know not to watch it, and I am much happier. There are many other fantastic shows I can watch, and I have barely any free time as it is, so I want to make sure the few shows I watch are just perfect for me.

It's nice that we live in a world that has such a wide selection, so we can each choose the shows that align just right with our desires and interests.

My dad's degrees are in human behavior, sociology and psychology and his career before it got too stressful was in the addiction field as a social worker, so that was the discussion of Sherlock Holmes when I was young and reading them, from that point of view. It wasn't until it was assigned reading in English that there was a focus on the mysteries.

Our experiences shape so much of what we take out of literature or cinema that when it's really well done, 2 people can walk away with completely different impressions of what something was all about. It's really wonderful to get the insight from others!

My teenage Anglophile daughter dislikes Elementary except for the clothes, and adores the BBC Sherlock (dressed as him for Halloween this year!) - she's more interested in him as an intellectual than as a hero, so she remembers the subtle humor and puzzles more than the mysteries or the flaws.

Maeve, I agree in that those shows are unwatchable. When House was new I watched it for about a season or so, but it kept getting darker and the storylines and the main character just turned me off.

I've not watched the latest Sherlock on TV, but I keep an eye out for reviews and articles about the series. So, I can't speak of their current content. But if they are anything like House, then there is a reason why I've not wanted to check out the show.

Thank you for your comments - they are very much appreciated. Sounds like you and I are on the same page; and I'm sure we are not the only ones.

Lisa, we certainly do have our preferences. For example, I like the cast members of Criminal Minds but I have a difficult time watching the show due to the extent of the brutality. If it weren't for that, I would consistently watch the show just for the interaction of the characters.

Shala, that's really interesting that you and your family have had such detailed discussions about Sherlock Holmes. I also find it interesting that your daughter holds the opinion she does. Sounds like a very thoughtful daughter who knows her own mind. In this case, I would agree with her as I like the British Holmes as well.

Thank you for sharing your history regarding this character.

Edie,
I watched quite a few of the CM episodes. Like you, I liked the characters. But the I realized how very sadistic the stories were. It was a kind of pornography of violence and evil. I stopped watching. Bit by bit I have noticed that the other shows--csi ny and even the original csi set in las Vegas have become almost as sadistic. I've stopped watching them as well.

There comes a time when we need to draw the line as to what is acceptable to us. My tastes have changed over the years, but so have what is allowed on TV. Certainly not the shows I watched in the sixties and later. It's too bad that shows we used to like we can no longer watch because they have gotten more violent. So sad.

I've just watched the two Robert Downey, Jr. Sherlock Holmes movies. They too take an unusual twist on the Doyle characters, but--unlike the CBS rubbish--they retain the spirit of the originals.

I understand, Maeve. Not all updated movies or TV shows are worth watching. If someone is going to take on such a popular and well-defined character such as Sherlock Holmes, they better get it right.

Thanks for letting us know your take on the two different versions. There definitely are two schools of thought as to whether they succeeded or not.
