The Paralympic Games owe a huge debt to their founding father, Dr Ludwig Guttmann. Dr Guttmann had an unwavering belief that sport could change both patients perceptions of themselves and shift medical and public thinking about the potential of disabled people.

Weren't they an amazing "Games" Asha, they really taught us to look beyond disability towards what can be achieved.

And the "Festival of Flame" closing ceremony was again just spectacular, out of this world.

Most countries featured many hours of the Paralympics but there are those that gave it hardly any TV coverage, and the International Paralympic Committee has already said they are going to make sure that does not have a chance to happen again. The attitude of those TV companies was in a way an insult to the courageous and talented athletes from their own country, as well as the others.

One review which summed up the games beautifully was in an Australian newspaper. A disabled journalist Melanie Reid marveled at the unique sights of Paralympic events:

"80,000 people falling silent so that a blind long-jumper can sprint into her darkness towards the sound of someone clapping".

"The sight of a young woman, her body frantic with cerebral palsy, achieving serenity on the back of a horse. The potency of men with no legs turned into gods by the menace of their running blades."

She concluded that the games had somehow made disability "cool".

Dr. Guttmann would be proud.

Here is a link to some super photos of the Paralympic Closing Ceremony - The Festival of Flame.

Francine what wonderful quotes from the Australian journalist - more poetry than prose.

Interesting what you say about coverage - in the UK the Paralympics were covered by Channel 4 (who paid a high price for the honour) rather than the BBC. Whereas I heard people talking a lot about the Olympics - with many watching coverage every day - my impression is that people kept up less with the Paralympics.

Great photos of the closing ceremony - I thought it was great, and it generally had good coverage although some people thought there was a bit too much Coldplay...
