Planet Earth presents a grand international sporting spectacular every four years, the Olympic Games. Even if you're not fond of sports, it's a majestic pageant and a set of unfolding dramas that a scriptwriter couldn't hope to emulate. Here is my astronomical tribute to this magnificent saga.

Have so enjoyed your Olympic Night Sky Olympic Tribute Mona. Checked it often to keep pace with what was going on, and your Night Sky Olympics Pinterest board is just great.

Being able to put the pictures with the "legends", makes it all come alive.

Thanks not only for the thought but actually carrying it out, it really gave the Olympics another dimension.....and my goodness didn't the Brits do well.

Not so quite many 'Happy Bunnies' in Germany at the moment though, there is very little gazing at the heavens and rather a lot of 'naval gazing' going on.....nevertheless they enjoyed them, there was even one comment that London 2012 might be a new "Personal Best" for the Olympics.........now if they had seen your Pinterest board it would have been a "definite".

Thank you, Francine, and I'm glad you enjoyed the article and the London Olympics. I watched the coverage on the television rather than join the crowds.

It was good to see the excellent support people gave to the marathons and other road events. I think it's a tremendous achievement to complete an Olympic marathon, but it must feel a bit lonely to come in way behind the leading runners. It was great to see the crowds still there and clapping them all over the finish line.

I was only suddenly inspired to write the article after the Olympics had started. It was a bit of a rush then to complete and put the pictures up before I was away for a week. I've since added more pictures to Night Sky Olympic Tribute.
