I was quite disappointed today when I went to buy my farm eggs. They were out. The chickens are getting older and with the heat they are not laying very much. The farm expects to get some younger laying hens but for now I may be stuck buying the organic eggs at the grocery store.
The organic eggs cost more and are not as good as the farm eggs I usually buy, but organic beats the commercial, every day eggs at the supermarket. To me, after eating eggs from free range hens, the cheaper commercial eggs have no taste, plus I do not support the companies that do not provide adequate care for their chickens. I won't buy cheap eggs from commercial farms, on a tight budget or not.
Once I cared for my friend's chickens for a week and she has a variety of hens. I loved gathering the eggs and there was a wide range of colors, just like you describe, Connie, including the blue-green ones. My friend's chicken eggs were the best I ever ate. Her chickens eat all kinds of fresh produce, clover, etc. I brought home 3 dozen eggs and I was so happy to have them. My friend lives too far away from me to get more of her chicken eggs, unfortunately.
