We have a new butcher shop in the Greater Kansas City Area. It's called Local Pig. I heard an interview on our local NPR station.

We went over there yesterday. All of their meat is locally grown on farms that are within a day trip of the area. What amazing meat! Hormone, antibiotic, and steroid free, plus it tastes great!

See what you can find in your area!

I love the small local markets that bring in the fresh, local meats and produce. I only buy farm eggs and I frequent the farmers' markets for my summer produce. I visit a local butcher for my organic meats too. The quality and taste is so much better.

They had mixed dozens of farm eggs. There were the light blue-green ones, white, brown, and brown with dark brown flecks. The eggs had been gathered the night before.

If you live in the Midwest, go to the Local Pig and buy a steak. WOW! They were yummy, and we made them with just salt and pepper. No enhancements needed!

I was quite disappointed today when I went to buy my farm eggs. They were out. The chickens are getting older and with the heat they are not laying very much. The farm expects to get some younger laying hens but for now I may be stuck buying the organic eggs at the grocery store.

The organic eggs cost more and are not as good as the farm eggs I usually buy, but organic beats the commercial, every day eggs at the supermarket. To me, after eating eggs from free range hens, the cheaper commercial eggs have no taste, plus I do not support the companies that do not provide adequate care for their chickens. I won't buy cheap eggs from commercial farms, on a tight budget or not.

Once I cared for my friend's chickens for a week and she has a variety of hens. I loved gathering the eggs and there was a wide range of colors, just like you describe, Connie, including the blue-green ones. My friend's chicken eggs were the best I ever ate. Her chickens eat all kinds of fresh produce, clover, etc. I brought home 3 dozen eggs and I was so happy to have them. My friend lives too far away from me to get more of her chicken eggs, unfortunately.

I enjoy a good, fresh egg, especially if it comes from a free range hen. Those are just the best.

For commercial eggs, I like Sparboe Farms Organic with Lutein. The yolks are a rich gold.

That's the sign of a good egg. Nice, high, deep gold yolks.

I used to buy eggs from a local woman. I would see her hens running around her yard. Her house was in the city, but the area there had huge yards and it had a country feeling about it. They were REALLY free range eggs.
