The typical reader of romance novels is married or involved in a committed relationship. Do you think that romance novels and romantic movies set unrealistic expectations for real life marriages or do they keep marriages together?

Do you read romance novels? Would you admit it?

I used to love them when I was younger (high school). But then the genre gets such flack for its formulaic writing (and I have literary writers among family and friends) so I never revisited these novels. Then, again, Stephen King gets dissed by the writing snobs. I think everything has its place and purpose.

I read Danielle Steel novels because they have a good end and interesting studies of human nature.

I never considered Danielle Steel's novels as true romance. I guess I figured romance novels were the type churned out according to strict formulas. You know, the Romance Book of the Month type of pulp fiction? My mother subscribed and would receive four short romance novels a month. She loved her romance novels. I considered it reading candy. I like reading, and I like candy, too.

I will pick up a Danielle Steel book soon. Do you have any recommendations as far as which title to begin with?

When I had more time I used to enjoy reading historical romances that take place in England, Scotland, and Ireland. I also enjoy romances that take place in the old west. It has been a while since I have been able to do any reading, but I would like to pick up a book again soon. I've found that romances help my relationships, getting me more in the mood for affection and intimacy. Of course the books do not mirror real life, and it is important to keep the stories in proper perspective.
