I always find a lot of peace in gardens. It is comforting to be around the many gifts that nature provides us.

I can't wait for our plantings to fill out. We planted a lot of wonderful, fragrant and beautiful plants! Azaleas, gardenia, honeysuckle, gazania...and on and on. The vegetables are doing well. Can't wait for summer's first tomatoes!

Debbie, wonderful article as always. This topic especially touches my heart...when my husband took sick and our lives turned upside down, it was always his love and passion for gardening that brought him back to a place of peace.

Despite everything that was going on, we would sit outside and enjoy the fruits of his labour as the hummingbirds would drink from the honeysuckle, bees would scavenge the blossoms of the perennials for nectar, butterflies dancing on the echinacea and sunflowers...it was healing and spiritual.

It was during this time we discovered the real meaning of stop and smell the roses. It will be something we never take for granted.

Bettina.....thank you for reading my article, and for your moving story about how spending time in and around your garden helped you and your husband to cope during a difficult time. Many people don't realize how therapeutic being out in nature and around living things can be. It can be as simple as just sitting on a chair outside breathing in the fresh air and listening to the breeze in the trees and the birds singing. It is such a gift.

I truly feel connected to nature and the earth when I use my bare hands instead of gloves while playing in the garden. The butterflies and bees that come to visit the flowers as well as the naughtier chipmunks make it all worthwhile and make me !
