Often called an AFO, the term Ankle Foot Orthosis refers to a brace worn on the leg over the calf and foot. The brace supports the foot and ankle, holding the correct position and preventing foot drop. This type of brace is also sometimes called a foot drop brace.

What are Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFOs)?

Do you have any experience wearing AFOs? Did you find it difficult to adjust to wearing them? Have you found them useful?

I think that they would be worth some adjustment difficulties if they help a person get around better. Thanks for sharing the information.

Hi Jori, I'm on my 4th AFO. First time for both legs though. They do take some time to get used to and require many adjustments by the orthotist. My first 3 AFO's were hard plastic with hinge at the ankle. As my leg became thinner I outgrew these. My newest pair area combo metal Allard Toe off for foot drop with custom boot for my ankle tipping over outward. The boot part cuts into my leg above the inner ankle on my right leg. The metal digs into the top of my foot on my left leg. So, I will need to make an appointment for some adjustments. My previous AFO has helped keep me from tripping over my own feet and stabilizes my ankle so I can walk better and farther. We just need time to gradually wear them in, and we need patience to keep returning to the orthotist for adjustments. Don't give up they can be very helpful. Melinda https://cmtnyus.wordpress.com/

I agree, Connie and Melinda, that AFOs can be helpful but do require a period of adjustment and may require some trial and error to find the best type and fit.
