Good question Mona.......and, as you can see from an illustration in one of today's German newspapers, they are also absolutely necessary in Germany this summer. Don't think you are suffering alone over there.
Actually there are retractable wheels available, and runners like ski blades, but the answer is once in place a Strandkorb is rarely moved more than a few inches.
If you order one for your seventh floor balcony, with the majority of classic models, it is built by the firm once it is up there and stays outside until you move............. even then it is usually sold together with whatever else is for sale with the apartment, rather than dismantled.
They can't 'collapse' as such, but can be carried by several strong human beings for storage inside, for example during the winter, although it is considered better for them to be kept outside so they can 'breath'. While because they are so well protected they are used some days in the winter, for that necessary bit of fresh air, without running the possibility of being frozen or blown away.
A Strandkorb really is a 'year round' piece of of outdoor furniture, and my favorite is the rounded Baltic Sea model it is just so "gemuetlich" somehow.
