Louisiana bowler shoots first 300 since May 8. Andre Trahan from nearby Houma, La., rolled the 18th perfect game of the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on June 19, ending a perfect-score drought that lasted more than five weeks.
The 25-year-old right-hander started doubles with a 162 game, but he then connected on 12 consecutive shots to record the first 300 at the Baton Rouge River Center in Baton Rouge, La., since May 8. He finished with a 199 game for a 661 series and teamed with his father, Kirk Trahan, for a 1,228 doubles total. Matt McNiel of Prior Lake, Minn., and Charles Vashaw of Deephaven, Minn., lead Regular Doubles with 1,489.
"It's an honor for me to have a 300 here because not a lot of people expect to come out here and shoot really big scores," said Trahan, who made his fourth USBC Open Championships appearance. "It's awesome to be one of the few to do it this year, and I'm excited that my name will always be on the wall next to so many great bowlers."
Trahan's previous high series at the Open Championships was 562, so his only goal heading into this year's event was to shoot 600. He added 631 in singles and 604 in team for a career-best all-events total of 1,896, more than 350 pins better than his previous high.
Florida bowler takes Classified All-Events lead. Ed Swietek of Sarasota, Fla., had six games of 202 or better on the way to 602 in singles, 600 in doubles and 595 in team for a career-best 1,797 all-events total, and he and took the Classified All-Events lead June 15. Mark Knippers of Baker, La., previously held the lead with 1,789.
Swietek, a 56-year-old left-hander, started singles with 232 and 212 and knew he had a shot at the top spot, but he didn't know all-events was within reach, too. When he finished with 158, he knew would not be taking home a singles title. Joel Fee of Pella, Iowa, leads Classified Singles with 655.
A look ahead
Lifetime average leader Michael Nape of Yorkville, Ill., will lead his Fox Bowl team into the Baton Rouge River Center on June 20-21.
Nape tops the lifetime list with a 217.66 average for 216 games. Eligible bowlers must have competed in the Open Championships a minimum of 20 times. Gail Myers Jr. of Monroe, Wis., entered the year second on the list (217.53 for 207 games) and posted a 1,858 all-events total in May.
Last year at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., Nape helped his team to a second-place finish in Team All-Events (10,242) and an eighth-place effort in Regular Team (3,387).
Four members of the team (Nape, Gregg Zicha, Peter Spreadbury and Anthony Jordan) took home the Team All-Events title in 2008. Their fifth bowler, for the second consecutive year, is 2011-12 Professional Bowlers Association Rookie of the Year Josh Blanchard.
