Many of Germany's festivities for Sommer-Sonnenwende, Summer Solstice, and Johannisnacht, Midsummer Eve, were significant mystical events with pagan and pre-Christian origins. Throughout Germany fire is still used to celebrate the triumph of sun and light over cold and darkness, and this is a design made by fires on a mountain.

What a fantastic and informative article, Francine. I am most interested in the symbolic meanings of the herbs, flowers and water -- and, of course the fires and the symbolism of burning away illnesses, and for rebirth.

I so enjoyed reading your article. smile

Thanks so much Phyllis, glad you enjoyed the article..........it is you who is the expert on these types of things after all smile

The mountain fires on the Zugspitze are an amazing sight as you can imagine. They are dotted all over the mountain, so perhaps one even took place where Beetlemess walked when he climbed up it in the winter.

You are welcome Connie, they are fascinating traditions aren't they, and am glad you enjoyed them and sorry to be so late getting back to you.

I had no idea Germany still celebrated so many different ancient customs and traditions until living in the country for some time. You know how it is when one moves anywhere, becoming acclimatized to a different culture and way of life and living is the first priority, then it is 'Discovery Time'.

And that is so rewarding.
